Yep, I had a cousin who worked as a district manager at one time for McDonald's.  His was paid by the franchisee and not the corporation. 
Wasn't at one time Wendy's known as Judy's. Hardee's is known as Carl's Drive In, in some places,  I believe.

Carl's Jr which is basically the West Coast Hardee's. Carl's Jr was independant back in the 80s when I was out there but they were the exact same thing as Hardee's, I used Carl's Jr more than any other fast food restraunts because I like roast beef and hot dogs...
