I have no political affiliation, I think that's most of the problem these days, people vote for party instead of the best candidate

That doesn't work in FLA, here you must be registered as a Republican to vote in the Republican primary, a Democrat for the Democrat primary and so on. As there are so few NPA, I, L and GP  candidates for state and local offices the so called independents are shut out of all but the  general elections.

Here it's better to register as either a R or a D and then vote split ticket in the general elections.

As screwed up as FLA is when it comes to voting many states are even worse.

Kentucky is the same way, you have to be either a Republican or Democrat in order to vote in primaries.

Speaking for myself, I was a Democrat for years, until this last election, now I voted for who I think the best candidate no matter what party. I don't go by the party anymore.

You can in regular elections but in a primary you can only vote what your party is.

Well, what if you don't care for the candidates in your party? I would think a person can vote for who they want, no matter what party they are registered in. Doesn't sound Kosher to me.

May not be kosher but it is the only way you can vote when the general election takes place. Then you can either vote straight ticket, split the ticket or vote for anyone you like. If you don't vote than you have no right to complain about what happens.

Doesn't work that way. You have to vote in the primaries in order to vote for who you want in general elections. If you don't vote at all than you can't and don't have the right to complain about what is happening.

You can in a general.election but not in primaries.It is not how people.are elected or chosen to run against someone else. You can't just vote  for who you want in primaries that is why many choose to vote Republican or Democrat so when general election happens they can vote for whoever.

The thing is you may not like who is running in the primaries but the only way one can vote is by declaring a party and then in general election you can choose to vote differently.  I don't vote straight party when it comes to general elections but I vote in the primaries in order to vote in the general elections. If you don't vote in the primary after so many times than you aren't allowed to vote at all until you have registered in a party. My philosophy is one can't complain about what is happening in the country if you haven't voted.
