Yes, they can be stubborn. When our barn caught fire and was burning down we were fortunate that our pony Buster was out in the pasture, but I had to hold him back by his halter the whole time from the fire because he was so upset and wanted to go back into the barn even though it was burning down. We managed to salvage a nest of a dozen chicken eggs... but the hen and rooster both ran back into the burning barn and were both lost. Dad took the eggs to a neighbor friend who had bannie hens and hatched them for us.
Here's a little interesting fact, horses and ponies will run back into a burning barn, a mule won't.  A mule will stand still when needinf help such as getting something removed from its legs like barb wire but a horse will kill itself trying to get the wire off of it.

I've enjoyed reading here but I've been hesitant to post. I'm afraid I don't have the same kind of childhood memories you've all had. No farm work, no homemade biscuits on the table, no tire swings, no camping or fishing, and no delectable homegrown maters. I grew up on concrete and water. Spent a brief stint in rice paddies and a while in coconuts and pineapples. It was a different life but one I loved and all I knew. We did spend vacations at my grandparents in KY when we could, but not on a farm. The greatest thing in the world was knowing Santa could land his sleigh on an aircraft carrier and we could eat pressed turkey and Neapolitan ice cream squares. I grew up eating $hit on a shingle and loved it. I went to more schools than I can remember and didn't actually have a "best" friend until I was in my teens primarily because we weren't in any place long enough to actually have best friends.

However, I'm not a stranger to tobacco, cows, horses, chickens, pigs, hay, corn, and hard work. I married it.

Sounds like a great life to me Inco... I would wager by your description of life growing up you were raised in a full time military man family... a lifer. Much respect in this. You have more life experiances than anyone here. Much respect to you and especially your father. You are special and we thank you for your service and that of your entire family. Blessings

Everyone's childhood is different so your memories would be different than mine or someone else's.  Post whatever memory you want.

I also totally agree with cowface on ICNO's life. I wager she saw more of the world than most of us did growing up.

Is it true Santa also delivers precision guided presents to poor little boys and girls in developing nations?

I agree with everyone else ICNO, everyone's childhood is unique and that's what makes for interesting stories and memories. Please feel free to share.

I grew up no different, was a kid in a coal mining area a kid in the 1970s and teenager in the 80s and was adapted to a TV culture myself. I always had the modern conviences of our time but we were not rich. I had decent vacations and been to many places myself....

Going to Lakeside Amusement Park near Roanoke every Summer was a big deal. That amusement park shut down in 1986 over a lawsuit that forced to close it down. It was outdated and Carowinds in Charlotte and Kings Dominion near Richmond took business away from them. They were a big deal before the 1970s.

I got many memories but nothing overwhelming impressive in my mind...

I remember walking to elementry school cutting accross our cornfield in the winter as a short cut, but if it was too bitterly cold and windy I walked backwards. Luckily it was only about a half a mile. Mom & Dad both left for their factory jobs early so my brother and I had to set our alarm clocks and get our own selves up, dressed, breakfast, and to school on time. We never missed.

Jumping on old used and patched tractor tire inner tubes ~ that was our form of a trampoline ~

If you had two or more people jumping at the same time and hit it just right, you could get pretty damn high in the air.

We rode our bikes to school.
It was great and we took short cuts too!

OMG, that was one of the fondest memories of my childhood.
I would hop on that train to Grandma's (mother's side) to spend most summers there, because I knew there would be always be a blackberry pie in the oven if I set out early enough with my ice-cream pail in tow.

I'm kinda hungry now, FS.
Could you toss me over a sticky cinnamon roll?

HI IslandGurl... can you rember any of your Grand or Greatgrandmothers cooking/baking with the old wood cook stoves? They were very elaborate and fancy... and must have been a real art to control the heat and cook or bake with. I don't remeber my family still using these, but have seen some country folks that still did years ago... pretty cool I thought.
