If his lips or thumbs are moving...

From the man who insists on referring to the COVID-19 as the “China virus” and who has downplayed the severity of the pandemic — even comparing it to the “common flu” just two weeks ago, while the coronavirus ravaged countries all over the world — President Donald Trump is now suggesting that medical ventilators are quickly being produced by automakers.

This isn't entirely true.

Last week, Trump signed the Defense Production Act, which would allow companies to shift gears and produce necessary, in-demand goods, like life-saving ventilators. These medical devices assist those who cannot breathe on their own by delivering air through a tube into the patient's lungs, which is vital to those with coronavirus, as COVID-19 attacks the respiratory system.

According to The New York Times, there are 170,000 ventilators in the US. However, the American Hospital Association projects that more than 960,000 people will require a medical ventilator during the pandemic. In New York, they have just 5,000 ventilators, while estimates point to needing close to 30,000 to properly combat the growing number of positive COVID-19 cases.

However, Trump has yet to actually invoke the act.

According to a tweet posted last week, Trump claims he will invoke the act only if we find ourselves hurtling toward a “worst-case scenario in the future,” you know, like right TOGETHER!

During a briefing on Saturday, Trump claimed that he had conducted calls with General Motors, Ford, and “so many companies,” and said that these companies were currently in the process of making ventilators. Trump gave these companies the go-ahead to do so.

“Go for it auto execs, lets see how good you are?” he tweeted.

However, many of these companies have come forward and are offering their resources independently of Trump's greenlight. Manufacturing engineers at GM were already communicating with ventilator manufacturers before Trump's tweet, which has “baffled” the very companies he namedropped.

The Associated Press fact-checked the President's most recent claims and reveals that neither Ford or GM have started ventilator production and, if they did, they may not see results for months or longer, which may be too late to accommodate the impending medical supply shortage. Ventilators come with a hefty price tag, too. As The Washington Post reports, ventilators range from $25,000-$50,000 apiece. Not to mention there are rigorous testing and strict regulatory processes that ventilator production requires, which can take up to a year or more to be approved.

It should also be noted that the Defense Production Act is most commonly invoked to instruct companies to prioritize production contracts for goods it already makes, like medical supply companies. Outfitting auto manufacturing facilities with equipment needed to produce a product it does not normally produce may prove to be a lengthy process.

I think the media is making more of this than it really is, most likely a political ploy of some sort
Trump's "wartime president" shtick is ghastly — and it could totally work
Trump has found his 2020 strategy — posing as a real president on TV. Once again, cable news is his biggest ally

He's simply taken his rallies from the nations arenas to cable television news and it seems to be working out for his ratings and the news programs rating__a win win__except for the American people who are being scared out of their wits with misinformation and lies.

The Corona has not left, it is not over. It has made its entrance into our population. It is with us now and it is here to stay.  Come winter, the real pandemic will begin in earnest.

There better not be NO MORE lock downs! People are losing their jobs, businesses, homes, freedoms.

No More!  Corona will join the other hundreds of strains of viruses out there. Life goes on.

Wearing these masks reminds me of Muslim practices. Things are going too far now, people are sick of these crazy restrictions.

As the Coronavirus effects nature's own form of Eugenics on our faltering species, culling the weakest and least productive from among us, we are suddenly reminded that our lack of humility is the most dangerous foe we face.

Perhaps this experience could be a seminal moment for humankind, where we become more conscientious in our stewardship of the limited resources at our disposal. More likely, any lessons to be had will be quickly forgotten and we will resume racing one another down the path of self-destruction.
I wouldn't call the elderly the weakest, after all they didn't become elderly by being sissies

Actually, they are dumber..as evidenced by these recent riots and the large gatherings at bars and beaches during the worst global pandemic in the past 100 years.

Hey, people are just trying to live their lives, Paco. How about we lock the whole world up for 2 years, sound good?

Whoa - who you calling Paco? His name is Faith.

At least 1 year...or a vaccine...which ever comes first.

 ;)
Exactly,  if that is what it takes to make people healthy and combat this virus than lets do it.

Despite that the US is arguably the richest and most highly developed nation in the world, the catastrophic effects of this pandemic on our nation is more in keeping with a poorly equipped Third World nation.  Every one of us is in potentially mortal danger at this very moment because of the wildfire spread of this virus.

Why?

Because we are the only nation affected that has made the deadly pandemic a political issue.  And that is so utterly irrational that it dashes our credibility among civilized nations.
Whatchu mean we?  We didn't make sht, the Republicans on orders from their Lord and Savior made it political.

My neighbor has the corona, a light dose, hospital for a couple of days and home now on quarantine. No clue how how he came about it, never a fever or a cough but one day thought he was having a stroke so he had his wife take him to the emergency room where he tested positive. In a few days he'll get another test and if it's negative__he'll take another test the next day and if it's negative he'll be back out and about. He's older than me, so he's lucky.  Another guy I know also recovered from the virus although he was on a ventilator for a few days and  says it's a horrible experience.

So apparently there are different degrees of this infection that depend on where, when and what/who you came in contact with. Neither one knows where they were infected although the health department officials interviewed each in an attempt to trace their whereabouts.

Trump still talks and behaves as if this pandemic was specifically created to discredit him. And that by seeking treatment and yielding to cautionary measures is a direct rebuke of his legitimacy.
That sumbitch is nuts!

I somehow accidentally wound up in this god forsaken thread and didn't mean to post here.  I usually rip on Faith on the thread Faith followed me to.

I was looking for these posts and was wondering where they went.  Then I realized I posted on the wrong thread.

"The president later said he thought that "testing is overrated," adding, "I created the greatest testing machine in history."

He also said, however, that more testing in the US had led to an increase in confirmed cases. "In many ways, it makes us look bad," he said.

It isn't the first time Trump has made the claim. The president said last week during a roundtable event for seniors that "if we stop testing right now, we'd have very few cases, actually."

He's too gd stupid to realize that the testing sites also record the negative results.
