Supreme Court strikes down Hawaii’s ‘vampire rule’ for gun owners

6-3 ruling

The Supreme Court on Thursday struck down a Hawaii gun restriction that limits when people can carry firearms on certain private properties open to the public, saying it infringes on the right to bear arms.

On a 6-3 vote, the court invalidated the measure that requires people with concealed carry permits to seek permission from a property owner before entering. It has been dubbed the "vampire rule" because, as in the classic novel "Dracula" and related tales, vampires can only enter someone's home if they are invited in.

The court, often supportive of gun rights, concluded that the provision violates the Constitution's Second Amendment.

The ruling is somewhat limited in its practical impact because most states do not have provisions similar to Hawaii's. In the majority of the country, the law already assumes that people can enter private properties while armed if they have a permit to carry a firearm.

As a result, the ruling will only affect a handful of states that took a similar approach to Hawaii: New York, New Jersey, Maryland and California.

Enacted in 2023 as part of a broader gun law, the Hawaii rule applies to private properties open to the public like gas stations, stores and restaurants.

You can file for asylum as migrant if present in US or when you arrive.
So when do you arrive. Ruling saying turned away before actually enter is okay

U.S. immigration officials can turn away asylum seekers at the Mexican border, the Supreme Court ruled on Thursday.

In a 6-3 decision, the justices greenlit a “metering” policy devised under the Obama administration and expanded during President Donald Trump’s first term, under which Customs and Border Protection agents posted on bridges between Mexico and the U.S. turned back many asylum seekers.

The high court’s ruling overturned lower-court decisions that found Congress intended to permit any immigrant approaching a border checkpoint to file for asylum.

The challenged policy was officially rescinded by the Biden administration in 2021, but most asylum seekers at the border have been thwarted by Biden and Trump edicts even broader than the “metering” program.

Trump's mail-in voting order halted by judge, impacting 2026 elections
Trump, a Republican, signed the order on March 31 after calling for years for tighter rules on voting by mail and pushing the false claim that his 2020 election defeat was the result of widespread voter fraud

Federal judge not Supreme Court

U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani sided with several Democratic-led states that argued that the Republican president is trying to interfere unlawfully with the states' administration of federal elections.
Constitution assigns elections to states

His order directs the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to compile and transmit to the states a list of confirmed U.S. citizens eligible to vote in each state, derived from citizenship and naturalization records and other federal databases.

Trump's order also requires the U.S. Postal Service to deliver ballots only to voters on each state's approved mail-in ballot list. USPS recently moved to implement Trump's directive by issuing new proposed rules requiring states to provide the names and barcodes linked to their mail-in ballots.

The order also directs the U.S. Department of Justice to prioritize the investigation and prosecution of state and local election officials who issue federal ballots to people deemed “not eligible” to vote.

Voting rights groups sued the administration along with 23 states and the District of Columbia, arguing that Trump's order is unconstitutional and that he lacks any legal authority to assert presidential power over election administration.

The states alleged that allowing Trump's order to stand would force them to rush to overhaul their election systems before November, causing chaos and likely disenfranchising eligible voters.

Talwani, appointed by Democratic President Barack Obama, ruled after a different jurist, Trump-appointed U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols in Washington, DC, declined to issue a preliminary injunction in a related lawsuit brought by Democrats challenging Trump's order.

Nichols found that the Democrats' request was premature since Trump's order had yet to be implemented. They are appealing.

Trump administration identifies more than 500 migrant children for removal from the US, senator says-CNN

The Trump administration has identified more than 500 unaccompanied migrant children in US government custody to be potentially removed from the country, according to Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden.

The move marks the latest escalation of the Trump administration’s effort to focus on migrant children who arrived at the US southern border alone and are in custody awaiting to be placed with a sponsor, typically a parent or relative, in the United States.

The administration previously tried to repatriate Guatemalan children in government custody who arrived in the United States alone and didn’t have a parent in the country, but that was stopped by a federal judge.

A similar effort appears to be underway now – this time, focusing on children who have been in custody for at least six months and don’t have a relative or guardian in the United States.

“This is a severe institutional failure that places hundreds of vulnerable children in immediate jeopardy, effectively erasing them from the protection of U.S. oversight and thrusting them back into danger,” Wyden said in a letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

“To weaponize the very agency charged with their protection is an unacceptable escalation of executive overreach that undermines our nation’s commitment to due process,” he added. It’s unclear whether all the identified children will be swiftly removed.

ORR, which is housed within HHS, is charged with the care of migrant children who arrive at the US southern border alone. Those children, who are typically fleeing dangerous conditions at home, are often trying to reunite or be placed with a parent, relative or guardian already in the United States.

The children on the list described by Wyden are categorized as having no sponsor in the US and were “mainly placed in long-term foster care with ORR providers” nationwide. They’ve all been in custody for at least 180 days.

Trump administration officials had previously described the attempt to remove Guatemalan children as repatriations, citing coordination and requests from the Guatemalan government.

“The attempt is to have children back with their families and parents, not to be put into the United States with unverified sponsors or sponsors who are not lawfully present,” a former senior HHS official told CNN, referring to family in their home countries.

Judge blocks Trump order demanding Postal Service restrict mail voting
The decision marks a win for the states that have challenged the president’s effort to crack down on mail-in voting ahead of a consequential November midterm.
06/25/2026 11:56 AM EDT

A federal judge in Massachusetts barred the Postal Service on Thursday from restricting the delivery of mail-in ballots to states that don’t hand over a list of eligible voters, rebuffing President Donald Trump’s efforts to crack down on a voting method he has long targeted.

The agency, charged with delivering parcels to every address in the nation, neither possesses the constitutional authority to administer elections — a responsibility delegated to the states — nor has it been granted power by Congress to create binding regulations on voting by mail, U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani stated in the decision.

The ruling is a victory for the 23 states and Washington, D.C., which sued the Trump administration over the president’s March executive order that demanded the agency implement such a rule.

Trump has repeatedly tried to overhaul election administration via executive orders, and other portions have previously been blocked by other federal judges. Talwani’s decision also blocks another part of the executive order directing the federal government to compile a list of American citizens residing in states.

One economic one before I go out
Now talking about raising interest rates not lowering them

Inflation hits 3-year high, pressuring Fed to raise rates as election nears
If the Fed raises rates in the coming months, it would be a blow to the president and the GOP’s economic sales pitch at the height of a campaign that's defined by affordability.
06/25/2026 10:29 AM EDT

President Donald Trump is on a mission to lower borrowing costs as quickly as possible. Wall Street now expects them to go higher.

The Commerce Department on Thursday reported that the Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation gauge rose at an annual rate of 4.1 percent last month — more than double the central bank’s target. Even excluding volatile food and energy prices, the so-called core measure of the personal consumption expenditures index climbed at its fastest pace in almost three years.

The recent surge in prices has weakened the spending power of American consumers, who were already furious about the rising cost of living. And now, markets are pricing in a 64 percent likelihood that Trump’s new Federal Reserve chair, Kevin Warsh, will raise rates as early as September, which would tighten financial conditions for households and businesses in the weeks leading up to the midterm elections.

If the Fed raises rates in the coming months, that would be a blow to Trump and the GOP’s economic sales pitch at the height of a campaign that will be defined by affordability.
