Many folks think that Putin couldn't afford to have a prosperous Ukraine on the Russian border. Ukraine was heading that way, with it joining the EU. Ukraine would have been more economically prosperous and as they have shown with drone technologies during the war, more technology advanced than Russia in a decade or two. Putin can't have that. Russians would notice that and realize how stupid they and Putin are, and would demand changes.
Indeed, and that comes after the beach vacations. Crimea was russia's Florida. They wanted it back and wanted to secure it.
