Can any one help me if they have the time.

I just went to start up my Macintosh Performa from 1996. It worked fine the last time I used it around a year ago. Now nothing. It just shows a small question mark in the middle of the screen. So I got out the installation disc for it, and it wont let me install because it says locked. I'm puzzeled. I was using it for the printer hooked up with it, now I can'r do anythiing with it. I will not throw away this computer until I know it's finished for sure.Thanks in advance. The printer is a good one too, prints great, so I hate to trash this computer for the printers sake.

If your Mac doesn't start up

If your Mac starts up to a flashing question mark, but then doesn't continue starting up, try these steps.

    Turn off your Mac by pressing and holding the power button for a few seconds.
    Press the power button once to turn your Mac back on. Immediately press and hold the Command and R keys on your keyboard to start your Mac from macOS Recovery. Keep these two keys held down until you see an Apple logo or globe.
    If prompted, select a Wi-Fi network to connect to the Internet as part of startup.
    After the macOS Utilities window appears, choose Startup Disk from the Apple menu.
    Select your startup disk, then click Restart.

If you don't see your startup disk in the Startup Disk window, close the window and try the next sections of this article.

Thanks, I tried this and also tried to boot my dram, did not work, I will try again tomorrow. Thanks for your input. Its an old Mac 7600 series. It did work fine, the last time I used it about a year ago. It was plugged in all that time.

If only I can get my installation disc to unlock, I might be in busisness. It does start up with the disc, but I cannot get into the settings with the disc locked.

It starts up, but gets stuck, then nothing.

This is the exact model I have, and the Monitor is clear!

It dos he same exact thing as the one in this ideo, with a blinking question mark. I already had he hardrive replaced sev. years ago with added ram. It worked perfecty up until the other day. The Hard drive can't be dead.

I have the original software start up disc for it. But I can't get into the settings cause the disc says log, so I cant select the hard drive icon, can do anything. Have any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

typo: startup disc says LOCKED . Why it says locked I have NO idea. I'm thinking if I can get this disc unlocked I am in business.

Thanks for trying CF. I'm not giving up yet, all I use it for is to print. I really like the printer and its serial port so cant hook up the printer to anything else, and there aren't any printer drives available for it. The printer is from the year 2000. I already tried to get a printer driver for it years ago and no luck. I really don't want to be bothered with 3rd parties or bother with repairs for this.

I know what you mean... is it is such a bummer to have to be forced to keep up with modern techknowlgy... it never ends!
