Ugly Hearts and Groups, Have Always Existed in America....But it Takes Demented Politicians to Give Them a Voice, like Steve Scalise and Jim Jordan.
America has always, at various periods, had a venal, prejudiced, xenophobic element in our populous. But only at certain junctures were there political leaders, or parties to give voice to those disgusting, pernicious views.
From the late 1920s to the Civil Right's era, the 50s to the mid 70s, you had Folsom, Faubus, Thurmond, Wallace, Lester Maddox, and a list other cretins, who carried the Klan torch for segregation, voter suppression, and worse. This was the Jim Crow, South and there was a litany of politicians, who proclaimed those disturbing views.
You had Joseph McCarthy, and the "red baiting, red scare, false patriotism period", after WWII, which used the word "communist", or "socialist", to destroy people's lives and careers.
The mid 1960s, to the mid 1970s began the shift of segregationists, anti-minority groups from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party. The Republican Party, also became wed to the worst part of superficial religion, the "evangelical right", and its strident, homo-phobic, anti-abortion groups.
While these unsavory factions, submerged for a time, Donald Trump, the narcissistic leader, who would welcome "snakes" to the Republican Party, if they assured his grasp on power, became President, in 2016, bringing many hate groups together. Trump allowed the worst, most virulent elements of our society, to have a voice. And so it goes.....
