Here's what you linked, a National Review piece

What Does the National Academies’ Immigration Report Really Say?
By GEORGE J. BORJAS
September 22, 2016 11:30 PM (Take note of date)

You linked a contributor at the National Review using 20 year old data to explain a current problem.

Who falls for sht like that? Borjas is an expert on the subject, certainly he didn't need to cherry pick
data to make his point.

2016 is only three years ago, Realtime. That was the National Review. It also indicated the data could be manipulated to favor either argument. There is no real way to determine the actual cost.

The 20 year old data was from the government's GAO.

First graph in your link

It turns out, however, that the newer immigrants are not assimilating quite as rapidly as earlier waves. Here’s the table from the report that documents the slowdown of assimilation:

(Table wouldn't link)

This table reports the percent difference in wages between specific immigrant waves and natives at different points in time. The data obviously show a lot of wage growth for immigrants who arrived in the 1960s and 1970s, but far less for immigrants who arrived in the 1980s and 1990s.

In this piece the author also considers generational costs for  illegal immigrants. What? The 2nd and  3rd generation would not be illegal as they were born here.

That whole piece is simply fun with numbers.

I agree with that. They can be manipulated to suit anyone's position. No one really knows the cost or lack of it.

Thing is that your link's author Borjas is an expert on the subject but the problem is that he written so many books/articles on the subject with so much data that he's constantly being cherry picked by the like of Fred Eibel and other rightwhack hustlers who are clearly in that game for the buck$.

Borjas wrote that the Marielitos drove down the average wage in the Miami area by over 5% and that data became gospel, across the board for all illegal immigrants and sticks to this day.

In 1980, 125,000 brokeazz illiterate Cuban's,  nearly half of them criminals were dumped in South FLA__duh__what would anyone expect to happen?  It was a one time event which perhaps still has a negative affect in certain sections of Miami, but is has exactly zero to do with illegal Mexicans or Hondurans harvesting vegetables in the Midwest or installing roofs in my county or yours.

True. Two Cubans put in a tile floor at my house here.

I remember Castro emptying out his prisons A lot of them ended up in New Joisey.

Hi Realtime,
If Buttigieg can produce an agenda that is solid enough for All of America without riding South Bend's *awesome recovery?

*The same recovery that all of us in the rust belt have experienced without his help.
If he can sell an agenda that the educated in America can see as intelligent and helpful for this country (all of this country), he's a sure fire winner.

In my opinion; in this day and age his being Gay can work for him as well as JFK'S being Catholic and Obama's being Black worked for them.
That's my opinion anyway.

I wish I had the time to be a daily poster here, or back on Topix. But I just don't. I try to read as much as I can here and other places.
That said I give a shoutout to Teaman. As much as I detest his politics a part of me understands them and he's always been a civil netizen, Hi Teaman.

Take care all

Update: Buttigieg is still the only candidate I will spend my vote on.

I know he's polling less than the big three that I won't even consider. But if he would be more assertive and maybe hire a Tailor or Stylist (whatever you call the person(s) who dresses; chooses the haircuts and puts on the makeup of public figure's) I believe his numbers would soar.
There's a lot to be said for 'a sharp dressed man', look to our past Presidents for validation of that.

And no, there's not a queer bone in my body it's more that I don't care.
For me it's about the Core Values of America and her future, he seems to get it a whole lot better than any of the other contenders.

My God, just listen to what All of the others are offering and the current Dems in power are doing - nothing but useless talk.
It's politics, I know but My God. What a joke.

You're a thoughtful guy Jimmy__and I'm sure when the time comes you'll cast your vote for whoever is facing off with lyin Don. Any fish biting on Chautauqua this week?  Fishing is great here.

Back to Mayor Pete......

I watched the Democratic Debate last night and some of the spin afterwards. I've gotta say, this guy impressed me more than all the other candidates combined. I don't know whether he'll win the nomination or not but I sure hope he's on the ticket.

I totally agree she did indeed, and she did it was poise. Her affiliation with John McCain and her experience should make her closer to the front runners. I think her biggest problem, until now, is she's just too nice. A lot of what happens boils down to how much money you have to spend. That and name recognition are what generally keeps the front runners in the front.

I agree but I'm unsure if he'll ever gain much traction in the black community because of his orientation.

This is funny because my wife thought Klobuchar did really well and I still want Buttigieg, but whoever it is has to get a lot tougher than any of them are now.

I still remember the 2016 primaries as I watched in wonder as that orange blob systematically took apart some very seasoned opponents.
It's amazing that a flunky reality wannabe who I've never been able to stomach ran over everything in his way.

Hey Realtime, I need to apologize because I saw this post awhile ago and made a mental note to reply and then I guess I lost my notes. :)

Lol It's a different type of fishing up here, not that deep sea charter stuff but we do get the diehard Musky guys and Bass pros who pizz and moan about everything.

The last couple of years its been this stupid blue green algae that's taking over most of the inland waters, at least up here.

The Kings of Fishers run out their boats and you'd swear it was the first time they've ever been in a boat.
They've been tearing up props like pieces of paper and running to the Marinas crying that's it our fault they need a prop, when all they really need to do is toss the stupid thing in reverse when they windup, but noo (the tourists do the same with rentals too).

Oh well keeps the local machine shops busy rebushing props.
Here's a link of what they fish for up here:
https://tinyurl.com/y5j3utfw

Personally I'm a walk the stream fisherman.
Find a nice spot with a deep hole and park my butt on the bank and toss a worm and bobber in, drink beer and wait for bass and be happy with the sunfish I toss back. Haven't had a chance in quite awhile though.

Sorry this is so long but I don't give myself enough time to keep up online and I wanted to tell you I told my wife we were riding down for bike week 2020 to make a couple of internet guys (you and Teaman) by us a dinner. :)

When she got done laughing she reminded me the last time we went down for that was 2000 and I swore for years after that never again would we leave out of here with 5 feet of snow on the ground, was a blizzard that year and I'm not any younger.

I'm positing that Bloomberg and Mayor Pete might be the ticket to beat Drumpf and Pence.

That's not saying a woman can't do the job or hold the job, but I suspect the current list of female candidates can't beat Drumpf and aren't interested in number 2.

I also think that Mayor Pete can't win at the top of the ticket for several reasons.

Buttigieg is still the only candidate I'll waste my vote on.

Bloomberg can stuff his authoritarian BS into a 32oz Big Gulp and choke on it.
That's as far as he's going anyway.

Pete Buttigieg

That has to be a fake name.
