"On Christmas Eve 1860 — months before Fort Sumter — Sherman told a Southern friend exactly how the war would end, down to the blockade and the industrial gap. His friend wrote it down.
Sherman was superintendent of the Louisiana State Seminary (later LSU) when South Carolina seceded. Four days later, on Christmas Eve 1860, he was talking with a professor there named David French Boyd, who spoke of the coming war lightly.

Boyd recorded Sherman's reply:

"You people of the South don't know what you are doing. This country will be drenched in blood, and God only knows how it will end. It is all folly, madness, a crime against civilization! You people speak so lightly of war; you don't know what you're talking about. War is a terrible thing!

You mistake, too, the people of the North. They are a peaceable people but an earnest people, and they will fight, too...

The North can make a steam engine, locomotive, or railway car; hardly a yard of cloth or pair of shoes can you make. You are rushing into war with one of the most powerful, ingeniously mechanical, and determined people on earth — right at your doors. You are bound to fail.

Only in your spirit and determination are you prepared for war. In all else you are totally unprepared, with a bad cause to start with. At first you will make headway, but as your limited resources begin to fail, shut out from the markets of Europe as you will be, your cause will begin to wane. If your people will but stop and think, they must see in the end that you will surely fail."

What strikes me is how much of it proved accurate: the blockade, the industrial disparity, the early Confederate successes followed by attrition.

Two details worth knowing:

Boyd remembered that Sherman was almost in tears as he spoke. Sherman later described the seminary as the pleasantest home he had known.
Three weeks later, Louisiana state forces seized the U.S. Arsenal at Baton Rouge. Sherman resigned, and his letter to Governor Thomas Overton Moore opens by quoting the motto carved above the seminary's door: "By the liberality of the General Government of the United States. The Union — esto perpetua."
Postscript: Boyd later served in the Confederate army and was captured. Sherman arranged his exchange. After the war Boyd returned to the seminary, rebuilt it into Louisiana State University, and the two men corresponded until Sherman's death in 1891."

Spain 2, Belgium 1

The World Cup is down to its final six teams after Spain and Belgium duked it out for 90 minutes in Los Angeles on Friday. In the end, La Roja escaped with a 2-1 win.

Spain was first on the board with a tight finish in the box from Fabián Ruiz in the 30th minute, but the Red Devils equalized before the first-half whistle on a brilliant header from Charles De Ketelaere.

With regulation time nearing an end, Spain substituted Mikel Merino on at the 86-minute mark and the super sub saved the day yet again with a goal in the 88th minute to deliver La Roja another late win. Merino pounced on an awkward deflection from Belgium goalkeeper Senne Lammens, who was subbed on for Red Devils legend Thibaut Courtois late in the game.

Spain will now advance to play France on Tuesday, July 14, at 3 p.m. ET in Dallas, after Les Bleus booked the tournament's first semifinal berth Thursday with a 2-0 win over Morocco, remaining perfect through five matches.

There are now two semifinal spots left, with Norway set to face England and Argentina facing Switzerland on Saturday.

Someone posted:

"When Sherman met with Boyd as a POW during the war, I think it was 1863, Boyd was completely unrepentant and defiant. This helped convince Sherman that the only way forward with the South was to wage unlimited war."

50 cents off current market rates

The gas is cheap. The Trump administration isn’t saying who’s paying for it.
Trump unveiled the "Freedom Fuel Network" ahead of Independence Day, offering gasoline at up to 50 cents per gallon below market prices
07/10/2026 11:58 AM EDT

President Donald Trump promoted a network of Philadelphia-area gas stations offering discount prices as a gift to the American people around Independence Day.

It’s not clear who’s footing the bill.

The White House has said only that the venture is a private company willing to take a hit on its profit margins to help American drivers struggling with high prices following the war in Iran. Trump himself said on social media it is backed by a “VERY smart Retailer” that is “doing this because they love the U.S.A.”

Elaine Chao, wife of Mitch McConnell, issues statement after US return
USA Today

This says she left 2 days before hospitalized on long planned trip. That his health didn't warrant immediate return. Dang what would

Chao's travel during McConnell's hospitalization fueled unfounded conspiracy theories online.

More: McConnell's health raises questions amid hospitalization. What we know
"The secretary was on a long-planned trip in China to support her family's philanthropic endeavors," a spokesperson for Chao said in a statement to The Courier Journal, part of the USA TODAY Network. "During the trip, she met with a number of people, including the U.S. ambassador. The senator's health did not warrant an immediate return to the U.S."

Chao, who headed the Transportation Department during President Donald Trump's first term and served as Labor secretary under President George W. Bush, has been married to McConnell for decades. Days after he was hospitalized, on June 17, the Chinese embassy in Washington, DC, released a photograph of Chao seated beside Chinese Vice President Han Zheng before a grand painting of the Great Wall in Beijing.

Chao's staff did not indicate whether she'd been in contact with McConnell since returning home, according to the CBS affiliate WLKY in Louisville. She left for the trip to China on June 12, just two days before McConnell was hospitalized, according to the outlet.

Also amid the swirling news cycle, the Kentucky senator's youngest daughter, Porter McConnell, deleted her social media account on X, according to the Independent.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I rather have Mitch alive and unable to vote than have his republican replacement
voting with the republicans.
