A great example of the stupidity of Donald Trump and the incompetence of his administration is that they’re arguing to the Supreme Court that his tariffs aren’t a tax revenue–creating mechanism, but a regulatory one.The key point is that if they’re deemed to be about tax revenue from tariffs — largely paid by American businesses and consumers — that constitutional role is clearly meant for Congress and could jeopardize Trump’s entire inept economic agenda. So, they’re arguing that these taxes aren’t there to create revenue, but that they’re regulatory steps meant to protect American jobs.Except, of course, for all the times Trump’s bragged about how much tax revenue the tariffs are generating — even going so far as to suggest we use that revenue to bail out farmers who are suffering from his tariff policies (irony clearly isn’t something Republicans comprehend) or to issue “rebate checks” to Americans.Over and over, for months, Trump’s bragged (and lied) about who pays the tariffs and how much revenue they’ve brought in — with his asinine claims ranging from “billions” to “trillions,” as if the two amounts are close and largely interchangeable. So, like with many other issues related to Trump, when a representative is forced to defend him in some kind of legal setting, what they’re claiming in front of judges is completely contradicted by the lies, conspiracies, and bullshit Donald Trump’s been saying publicly.
