At the local level, it's not even that.  I have no idea who the eff the clerk of the peace is or who the coroner is and what I might think of them personally.  I think most people just vote by if there is a D or R next to your name, for most positions and many are not bipartisan and only vote all R or all D.

New is another realm that has fallen to capitalistic corruption.

When things become about money/profit, ethics, honesty, and morality all go out the window.

I know that with my local news, if the story might harm local politicians, police, judges/prosecutors, local business, it will only be reported if it is too big to hide. I don't know if that is money so much as it is social/business connections.  This is not a large town and most of those people know each other, know someone who does, and/or have family ties.

Back in the day, when his school contemporaries were the local mucky mucks, my Dad could get minor tickets "fixed" with just a phone call.

Lack of common sources do not help but if those common sources are not reliable that is not helpful either.

The problem is now you can easily find a source on your phone that will parrot whatever nonsense you want to be true, regardless of if it's true or not.  It just becomes an echo chamber based on half truths, nonsense, and conspiracies.

No long ago, the whole country watched/read the same news, saw the same TV shows, the same commercial ads. Any differences were regional and all the folks in that region saw it.

We are lucky in some regards that our judges, sheriff, coroner and some other local.offices are non partisan on that.

In a Monday morning filing, the Justice Department moved to dismiss its indictment against SEIU-United Service Workers West President David Huerta, who was arrested last summer as he participated in a demonstration against Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Los Angeles. The government initially charged Huerta with a felony count of conspiring to impede an officer, later downgrading the charge to a misdemeanor..."

McConnell to remain in rehab, will skip Fancy Farm picnic in Kentucky
Sen. Mitch McConnell is “not yet medically cleared to leave the rehab facility and return to the office,” the office of the attending physician said.

Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) announced Monday that he will remain in rehab as he continues to recover from a June fall that left him briefly unconscious.

In a statement, McConnell shared that he is “working hard” to return to a full schedule but remains in “intense physical therapy.”

The Office of the Attending Physician confirmed that medical staff visit the senator daily to discuss “all aspects of his rehabilitation care” but added he is “not yet medically cleared to leave the rehab facility and return to office.”

“Since his discharge from hospital care, he has maintained a strenuous course of physical therapy and rehabilitation, including multiple sessions a day designed to rebuild strength and reduce the risk of future falls,” the OAP said. “His bout with childhood polio continues to be a significant factor in his mobility.”

McConnell, 84, was rushed to the hospital on June 14 following the fall and what he described as a “mild case of pneumonia.” In a letter to constituents earlier this month, he said that while he was briefly knocked unconscious, he did not suffer any broken bones, a stroke or a heart attack. It is unclear when McConnell was discharged.

But his continued rehab stay means McConnell will miss Kentucky’s premier political event: the annual Fancy Farm Picnic.

“There’s no place I’d rather be on the first Saturday in August than with the good people of western Kentucky, feasting on pork and mutton,” McConnell said Monday. “I hate that I’ll miss the fun this year, but I’m sending my best wishes to the St. Jerome community for a successful picnic.”
