Pope Leo XIV wants to stop AI playing God
The freshly minted pope is challenging the technocracy of artificial intelligence.

Pope Leo XIV lauded the “immense potential” of technology, while cautioning that it requires responsibility “to ensure that it can be used for the good of all.”

ROME — As leaders of the Catholic Church popes have long set out to confront the great challenges of their age, be they heretics, plagues or invasions.

In 2025, Pope Leo XIV has made curtailing the risks of runaway AI a defining mission of his pontificate.

In his first official address to cardinals, he warned of the dangers of AI to “human dignity, justice and labor.” Two days later, speaking to reporters, he lauded the “immense potential” of technology while cautioning that it requires responsibility “to ensure that it can be used for the good of all.”

Leo XIV is positioning himself as a guardian of the social fabric in the face of unchecked modern technologies.

The Vatican wants to avoid some developments in AI that would be damaging to human rights and human dignity, which would likely disproportionately impact lower skilled workers
Ethicists, philosophers and tech moguls themselves have warned of the risks of companies creating intelligent life forms.  Musk has cautioned against reckless development of artificial intelligence, likening it to the creation of "a digital God."

In 2020, then-Pope Francis assembled religious and political leaders along with tech companies such as IBM and Cisco to sign the Rome Call for AI Ethics, a commitment to the development of AI technologies that are accountable and socially beneficial.

I just had a chilling thought......AI might just BE God....How are we to know otherwise...Maybe all of the info that we individually accumulate is stored in a repository better known as "eternal life" after we physically die....Sorta like a matrix of sorts...

That's AGI...but I don't think we get to AGI w/o IPNB (Interpersonal Neurobiology). What we do as humans is create connections - even here on T2.

Ok, I can agree with that but in order to create connections doesn't there have to be certain conditions or a specific climate of sorts to exist first before such connections tend to solidify from their transient or fleeting nature?

The Vatican vs. killer robots: Pope Leo XIV takes aim at AI warfare
The pontiff’s first formal letter to the Catholic world warns of the dangers posed by autonomous weapons systems.

POLITICO · politico.eu

Pope Leo XIV on Monday raised the alarm over the use of AI in warfare and called for the technology to be “disarmed” and prevented from “dominating humanity."

In a document known as an encyclical — a papal letter outlining the church's perspective on a key topic — Leo said that artificial intelligence should never be used to make lethal decisions and warned that chat bots and other AI tools should never be equated with humans.

The encyclical marks the Catholic Church’s most forceful intervention in the global debate over how artificial intelligence is shaping the future of warfare, labor and society. The text risks putting the Vatican on a collision course with governments racing to deploy AI as a strategic weapon.
