Oh Canada...Canadians Rethink U.S. Travel

More and more Canadians are cancelling trips to the U.S. — and for many, it’s no longer just about politics, but personal safety and economic practicality.

Back in February, a Leger poll found that 48% of Canadians were less likely to travel to the U.S. because of President Trump’s threats toward Canada. A more recent poll shows that number has gone up — now, 51% say they’re less likely to visit the U.S. due to political tensions.

Instead, Canadians are choosing other options:
51% say they’d rather travel within their own province
48% are planning trips elsewhere in Canada
Others are looking at Europe or Mexico as better alternatives

Some Canadians, especially snowbirds, are making even bigger changes. City News reports that some are now selling their U.S. vacation homes, citing the high cost of living in southern states, the lower Canadian dollar, and worries about crossing the border.

This shift is hitting the U.S. tourism industry hard. The U.S. Travel Association reported that a 10% drop in Canadian visitors could result in $2.1 billion in lost spending in the U.S. economy. But according to Forbes, a sustained decline of more than 20% in travel from Canadians could push total losses past $4 billion by 2025.

In February alone:
23% fewer Canadians travelled to the U.S. by land
2.4% fewer travelled by air

What began as a boycott is now becoming a matter of safety, values, and solidarity — and more Canadians are choosing to support Canada with their travel dollars.
