It makes me feel better that I can resolve conflict so quickly. That is one of the benefits of being self-actualized as I am.
They have other words for 'self-actualized'.

I stopped going to funerals about a year after I stopped going to weddings. Weddings are actually more of a bittch. I usually just throw the invitations in the garbage. But I know I'm not completely out of the woods because I will probably run into the person again and I will have to have a pre-fabricated excuse in case they ask me why i didn't go to their wedding (read didn't give them a toaster or a c note).   Funerals are easy. I figure the bereaved will have been so overwhelmed by the death watch, making arrangements and then dealing with the funeral itself...it's exhausting I'm sure.  Attendant to those facts, the likelihood that they will even notice that I failed to show is practically nil.  So if i run into one of the decedent's family members, I shake their hand and say in a solemn tone... "I'm so sorry about______. It was a lovely service."  And viola.... win/win.

It wasn't that hard! She died surrounded by her family, in her own bed of 50 years and without hospice! Just as my father wished.

Keeping all the "money-makers" out of it was a bit of a challenge! Her GP hot pissed when I told him he was crazy! She had fallen and chipped a C-4, he wanted her sent to a surgeon! His immediate response: have you given up on "used her given name"...oh, you mean my my Mama...

My Dad's situation was fairly sudden. I felt like my inner compass was off for a while after my Dad died.

I won't go on open forum with a recent death. Not worth it.

I make sure I don’t give out that much information due to prying eyes. However, I have told others in private of what happened.
And some of it here as well.

I don't go to funerals. Strange custom.

I had this one fat, dago aunt on the Italian side of my family.... Aunt Louisa...Jesus...what an old battle ax.  The broad wore a  black shawl and a pair of what looked like army boots her entire life...morose, sullen... dramatic...  Anyhow, I stayed unmarried until I was like 37 or 38.  I guess among those of dirt-floor ethnic derivation, that is unseemly.  So every time I was at a wedding when I still went to weddings, Aunt Louisa would waddle up to me in her black shawl and army boots, pinch both my cheeks with her fat fingers and say in some guttural peasant's accent... "you're next!".
So the day came when one of the other old ethnic aunts croaked... Aunt Arcangelina.   I was sitting toward the back of the funeral room amongst the gladiolus surveying possible exit routes so I could slip out before some creepy old priest came in and started rattling off the rosary... which is some bizarre Catholic ritual meant to conjure the undead.  I could see that fat old hen clucking her way in with her army boots and purse the size of a steamer trunk. When she got right in front of me and before she could open her mouth, I grabbed both her chipmunk cheeks with my hands and said "You're next!". And then I got the hell out of Dodge.  That might have been the last funeral I went to and the last time I saw Aunt Louisa. I didn't go to her funeral. We weren't that close. She was like married to my dad's half-brother and she was Sicilian to boot...which are like Italian versions of hillbillies.

From fracturing my own vertebrae, recovering from that at 91 would have been a horribly painful experience.

No, after about three weeks, all was good @ 90! Got around fine, even bathed herself. Only had one kidney, fault off ovarian-cancer, had a complete hysterectomy and a few other issues. Didn't even drive a car, until she was 48! Taking that privilege was very tough!

The funerals on the Irish side of my family were slightly less of a drag. They had fighting and drinking.  The saying was: 'What's the difference between an Irish funeral and an Irish wedding?   A:  One less drunk".

That's much more like my family.
