I read that the prosecutor in Washtenaw County, MI has ended the policy of cash bail because it so unfairly penalizes the poor. It kind of has a snowball effect too. People lose their jobs, their homes, etc while they are locked up awaiting a trial that may see them vindicated. It kind of traps people in poverty. There are millions of
people that are so tightly balanced that if their car broke down, they would not have the money to fix it, they would then lose their job and be unable to pay their rent...and so on and so on. Locking them up does nothing but make things worse.
However, courts will still deny pre-trial release to people charged with dangerous and serious crimes.
