Club Night Shift / Re: Things You See On The Dance Floor February 03, 2019, 08:14:59 pm »

1972 Disko filled to overflowing at Bowling Green Ohio... the dance floor was lit from below in different colored clear squares.  There was a glittering disco ball, multi colored flashing strobe lights, many black lights. Then this chick walked up to me and said...  "would you watch my purse while I go out on the dance floor to dance?" I did so like a gentleman, but she never came back... so I left it and I spent the rest of the night on the dance floor rocking out... never saw her or the purse again.

  • I was hitchhiking through Mississippi back around 1976. It was getting dark and no hope of any ride so I bedded down... where is another story. This story is about the next morning when I woke up. I awoke early and hit the road with my thumb. I stood awhile and many cars passed me by... but then a car pulled over... I thought to give me a ride. Instead, the car pulled to a stop in front of me and dropped a girl off.

I was stunned... this car pulled over, but instead of giving me a ride, he let a girl out.  The car drove off and there I stood with this girl!  She was young, attractive, and she was not wearing a bra. (us guys notice these things)

So I said hi to the chick and asked "what's up?".  She replied that she had been to a party all night with her boyfriend, but he did not have enough gas to get her home... so he dropped her off with me.

So we both stuck our thumbs out for a ride down the road which we soon were successful since I now had this attractive babe. A pickup truck stopped and gave us a lift for maybe 6 miles... which turned out was far enough for the chick... cause she got off in only a couple miles safe and sound, bouncing along... ladiday. Why her boyfriend couldn't have done that I will never figure out... some boyfriend.

I thumbed my way on up the road alone... much slower after that, but with at smile.

  • I was hitchhiking in Florida back in the 70's when I stopped to take in some shade under a large shade tree in rural FL which looks nothing like the coast. Shortly a pickup truck pulled over and a man with a shotgun got out and yelled at me to move along or he was calling the Sheriff. I did so.

Later that evening up the road farther (or is it further) I caught a ride with this weird fellow. It was getting dark and I didn't want to ride with this "fellow" any further. So I asked him to drop me off at this upcoming orange grove I saw coming. So he did. I then proceeded to walk as far into this 200 acre orange grove.

I got in the middle of the orange grove when I heard this "fellow" yelling out my name. Why did I tell him my stupid name. I ignored the fellow and went further/farther into the orange grove and laid down for the night.

I awoke the next morning to blue sky's and glorious golden sun... laying on the ground where I had slept... I looked up and there above me hung one beautiful orange.

I looked around the huge orange grove and found that there were no other oranges on any of the other trees... only this one single orange hanging directly over my head.  So I picked that orange and had a glorious breakfast of it.

Moral of the story.... when weirdos may try to get you... do not stand for it... head to the middle of whatever shelter you can find.  Sleep safe... when you wake up... you will find safety... and a surprise for breakfast. Someone above watches over you always.

cowface, you are WELCOME @ Club Night Shift!  Dance, party and drink a few beers while you're here.  Heck, we'll even take ya home..  lol

Oh, that brought up a memory! ...or should I say what still I can't remember. Past summer we were camping at South Bass Island State Park, Lake Erie visiting Put-in-Bay for a week... or was it two... can't remember much. From what me and the Mrs. Cowface can retrace we hit all the bars celebrating my birthday. I usually can hold my own and drink tremendous amounts without incident.

Mrs. Cowface got loopy first, then she started telling everybody it was my birthday... then everybody started buying me HotShots and who knows what else. Last thing either of us remember is some kind, good samaritans were driving us back to camp on golf carts and even brought our rented golf cart back to camp. I vaguely remember seeing the kind soul driving and asking "Why are you doing this?" He said "We here on the island look out for folks and help those who need it to safely get them home". I said big thanks!

Then things got foggy and I found myself laying on the ground passed out with the Mrs. Cowface pleading with me to get up off the ground and come into the camper. I said "I can't move" which I couldn't, I felt paralyzed laying on the ground. Suddenly as if a beam of light from above, I stood straight up and walked into the camper.

Next morning we awoke and compared notes. I ran outside to make sure our rented golf cart was there or if I had left it in town. It was there, but parked where I never would have. I could not remember anything from the night before or how we got back to camp. Worst of all my glasses were missing and I can't see a thing without them... blind as a bat.

The next 4-5 days camping I wondered around... and all searches for my glasses at camp and at all the bars in town we came up with nothing. Finally, I could not stand being blind anymore so I prayed that God would lead me to my missing glasses... at that exact moment I got up and walked straight to a ditch next to our campsite and looked down... there were my glasses with one lens buried sideways in the dirt out of view.

The glasses were bent sideways and the buried lens was slightly scratched... but now I could see again! I am wearing these same glasses as we speak! The moral of this story is... guard your glasses, thank God for Angel designated drivers, and behave at Put-In-Bay.

Years ago back in 72 I was driving back from Toledo after dropping off my date. It was very late and I was having trouble staying awake. Then I see a roadside rest with a sign up for "Free coffee." It was some kind of Holliday highway safety thing. So I pulled in hoping a cup of coffee might help keep me alert and home safely. I walked up to the picnic shelter for my coffee... and found the coffee volunteer sound asleep with his head laid down on the picnic table snoring away. So I poured myself a cup of coffee and sat down at the picnic table facing the sleeping coffee volunteer.

I made a bit of noise thinking the coffee volunteer might wake up and notice he had a customer... but he never did wake up. After drinking my coffee and bidding sleeping beauty adue... I hit the road again. Shortly I was sleepy again and fell asleep at the wheel.

I awoke to find myself driving along gracefully in the ditch on the left side if the road. Fortunately this was on State Highway 20 which has a very wide gentle slope to the side of the road and not a deep ditch embankment. I pulled back safely on the road and continued on with the window down to keep me awake with fresh air. This helped none and soon I was nodding off to sleep again as I drove. Just then I awoke crossing a railroad track awakened by the blasting horns and light of a speeding freight train barreling towards me. We narrowly missed. That night I could not stop from sleeping... and now these days I cannot.

Moral of the story... sleep with your eyes open

For those soon to go to  bed... how bout a bedtime story... I was raised to pray each night...

"Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep, If I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take."

Then they would tuck me in with... "Don't let the bed bugs bite."

...no wonder I can't sleep? sheeese!

There was a tap, tap, tap one Saturday, just happened to catch me at home off work. It was two well dressed women from the Jehovah's Witness. They spoke kindly and wanted to sell me these little Watchtower magazines for a donation of just a nickel. I told them that I was a Christian and have a church home already.

They said "Oh, we are Christians and we teach Jesus also." I said "Very well, I would like to pray for you." They both immediately stepped back and said "We cannot let you pray for us." Then they turned about and swiftly ran away.

Moral of the story... prayer moves mountains.

thanks, no book... I do not want to write a book... but I vainly desire to leave a trace of my life experiences behind for my kids to find one day and learn of me better 30 years from now when I have passed.  I hope you don't mind if I choose to chart my course here. This place suits me best to write... OK

I used to have a neighbor who I passed nearly every day when walking the dog out. I'd say Hi Rick, how ya doin?" ...he would always reply... "No complaints, if I did nobody would listen." I always replied "I will listen." He had a few complaints... when he was 5 he was run over by a car and spent next 3 years in hospitals. Over the years he had 13 reconstructive surgeries. His right arm and leg were about useless even with braces. He was so happy when he was given an electric scooter chair, but he flipped it over 3 times & had to give it up. He was married once, but the woman was just after his disability check. Rick is blind in one eye which is explained by a huge gash still visible across his forehead. It still looks so deep indenting his skull it makes you wonder how he is still alive. Rick was left mentally developmentally delayed due to that accident 45 year ago... But he remains still to be the friendliest fellow I have ever met. Three cheers to my friend Rick!

I can't sleep, so will tell another story. Years ago living in CA I was a county welfare eligibility caseworker issuing monthly food stamps & welfare benefits. I dealt with many down trodden homeless people. Part of my job was verifying the applicants residence because we were on the Oregon State line... to avoid fraud.

Homeless folks had nothing to verify their residence, so we required them to draw a map of where they stayed or slept at night. Susan stated she was homeless camped on the Smith River with her two young children in a tent, and drew me a map there. I approved and issued Susan her food stamps, but had no way to notify her they were ready to pick up. I wanting to get her benefits to her needy family... under the guise of verifying her residence... took a drive in the county car to find her.

I drove to the river along a secluded dirt road to the sandbar where she said she was camped. There she and her children were just as she said. Susan followed me back to town and gratefully picked up her food stamps, financial aid check, homeless assistance funding, and Medicaid cards.

A year later I entered a local gas station and this same Susan was the cashier! She said with big smiles all aglow... that she is now going to church, had a steady income, a home, and her kids were back in school... but then she said "What are you doing buying this beer?"

Moral of the story... none of us are any better than the other...

Story time... Pearl was a girl I once knew and associated with years ago. She was homeless and frequented the same bar and dance floor as I. Pearl was homely to say the least... which worked in her favor... she dressed in Army fatuigs to appear as male to protect herself on the streets.

I saw through Pearls fasaud and befriended her on the dancefloor. She could dance. No one would have anything to do with homeless Pearl because she looked like she was carrying all kinds of street diseases & STD's. She had one dark dead looking front tooth and always had cold sores around her mouth. In her favor, she always had the pleasing fragrance of a campfire.

In spite of Pearl's rugged appearance, I saw into the heart of Pearl & we developed a community friendship. She would show up here and there... I welcomed her. Pearl sensed this and sought me out often. She had no one in this world. I have not seen her since in many years or know if alive or dead.

Moral of the story... everyone needs a Pearl.

With everyone now using DNA testing on 23&me or Ancestory.com we are bound to see some alien bloodlines show up. My DNA is with 23&me & so far my heritage is with no one I know... making me feel very alien. Other than being of far advanced intelligence & fortitude... I find no other similarities between myself and exterestials.

The road was long and endless... the road I was hitchhiking on offered very little. I was hitching back to college after a visit back home to the folks for the summer. I caught a ride with these two dudes in a van headed South who were smoking dope. They asked me to roll them one, and handed me their stuff... I rolled them one. I politely refused a toke... I was abstaining at the time. They said they were headed to New Orleans for the Mardi Gras.  I was not headed there... I was headed to college. But somehow I found myself in New Orleans anyway two days later at the Mardi Gras. It was a parade...

Moral of the story... do not parade, stay on your path
