"Could trump be charged with obstruction after he leaves office?"
one word answer-- "Yes."
Yep that one stung. It just doesn't get any clearer than that.
This is the point where smart republicans would jump off the sinking trump ship.
Shoot, this is the time that trump should jump off the sinking trump ship. Get a promise from pence for a pardon, run away, and take your chances with New York prosecutors.
-
So far we have learned that trump can be charged as soon as he is evicted, and that there are other related investigations.
And that the republican questionings are not helping trump a bit LOL

If the Republicans had any sense at all, they would either abandon ship or declare themselves independent or even resign or retire. Lol

At this point the GOP is perilously close to being open to a RICO charge.
Perhaps the best move would be for republicans to pick up the call to impeach.

Rep. Doug Collins, R-Ga, asked Mueller if his probe was "curtailed, or stopped, or hindered" at any point. Mueller replied "no."
How does that support an obstruction charge?

Repeatedly, in question and answer, that was addressed. Are you not watching?

The hearings are going good for Dems!

The hearings are going good for Dems!
Allow me to correct that statement,, The hearings are going good for Americans.

Yes, and Mr. Radcliff cleared up the false impression or confusion you alluded to.
I believe the question was hypothetical.

As did Mueller's opening statement.

Yep

Attempted obstruction is obstruction. Not that it needed to be explained, any rookie street cop can tell you that, but it was.
Testimony, and the report, shows that trump attempted obstruction and was only stymied by underlings who refused to act on his orders.
By the same token, the trump campaign attempted to collude with Russia. They were (maybe) not successful but that makes it no less damning.
Of course they can't be legally charged with collusion but they certainly should be held politically accountable for it. Every red-blooded American should be screaming for trump's political head for that alone.
-
Yep
I imagine that many republicans would rather not have supported impeaching Nixon but in any bad deal there comes a time when the smart play is to try and cut your losses.
Not that republicans have shown much smarts lately but R or D, both parties are primarily in the business of staying in business. At some point, and we may be there, the GOP is going to have to chose either survival, or trump.
-

Yes, thank you Mark!

How is that attempted obstruction? If I told or ordered you to rob a bank and you didn't, that would be attempted bank robbery?
Collusion? Are you referring to finding dirt? That actually happened when the DNC hired Fusion GPS.
Or are you referring to the second Trump Tower deal? That died when Trump was elected. I don't think even Trump expected to win.

Exactly and what is funny, is as bad as the Watergate hearings were for Nixon, they weren't as bad as what Trump has done.
-

Seriously? Nixon covered up a burglary and destroyed subpoenaed evidence.

I am not sure that we yet know the total extent of what trump has done but both Nixon and trump struck a blow at the heart of our democracy.
You certainly could make the argument that trump's lies, subversion of the GOP, blatant appeals to racism, attacks on the free press, etc, not to mention the, at the least, cooperation with a foreign adversary's interference in a US election are far worse.
-
Seriously? Nixon covered up a burglary and destroyed subpoenaed evidence.
What he did pales in comparison to what Trump has done. At least Nixon admitted he did it, Trump would lie his way out of it.

I believe the question was hypothetical.
No he didn't, he continued to pursue his notes even after Mueller passed on an answer as did the little mutt from PA who bowed up to Mueller stating that he was a JAG who had been in over 100 military trials. Probably article 15's.
The Dem's lost the morning round but easily won the afternoon round__by a mile.
Key is that Mueller very clearly stated that the Russian's and perhaps others are continuing to attack the US via the internet while Trump continues to deny!
-

BTW I remember your terrific entries and links on the Columbus Ohio Topix thread. Sad that you never joined us on the Obama thread.

Trump is denying collusion with Russia and that was the allegation. No one is doubting Russia tried to interfere with the election. A few Russians were indicted.

"....Robert Mueller confirmed former White House counsel Don McGahn was pressured to lie by the White House about whether he was ever asked by Donald Trump to fire the former special counsel while testifying before the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday.
"The president told the White House staff secretary, Rob Porter, to try to pressure [Don] McGahn to make a false denial. Is that correct?" Democrat Karen Bass asked Mr Mueller.
"That's correct,” he replied.
The former special counsel’s public testimony on Wednesday and 448-page report detailed numerous examples of alleged obstruction of justice on the part of the president. At one point, the report notes how Mr Trump told Mr Porter he would fire the former White House counsel if he refused to craft a statement claiming he was never directed to fire Mr Mueller. ..."

"...“Although Department policy barred you from indicting the President for this conduct, you made clear that he is not exonerated,” House Judiciary Chairman Jerrold Nadler said in his opening statement. “Any other person who acted this way would have been charged with a crime. And in this nation, not even the President is above the law."
Mr Mueller continued to make clear during his testimony on Wednesday that Mr Trump was not cleared of obstruction of justice, saying at one point, “The president was not exculpated for the acts that he allegedly committed.”
He also noted his team did not “address ‘collusion,’ which is not a legal term,” during his opening remarks. ..."

"Jesus, forgive me for ever being a Republican,” the former four-term Florida congressman said..."
That is about where every republican should be about now.

Crooked donnie is speaking right now and claiming that he won the day.
Is he laying the grounds for an insanity defense??

Mainly, Trump has lied about everything. And shall we go with being a **** grabbing leech. Or how about how many times he has declared bankruptcy and you want that running the country?
Not illegal, not impeachable. Don't vote for him next election.
A lot of companies filed for bankruptcy in the 90s, including some airlines.

But, McGahn didn't do it. As I said before, if I told you to rob a bank and you didn't, is it still a bank robbery?

Nothing illegal. There's a difference.
I'm more concerned about a judicial system going to hell than I an about Trump.

Yes, you could be charged in circumstances like this.

Everyone says above the law. A prosecutor doesn't exonerate anyone. One is innocent before any investigation or until proven guilty. He is exonerated before anything is started. The prosecutor failed to find any evidence a crime was committed. The law and the principle of our founding.
He addressed conspiracy and found none.

"...Former special counsel Robert Mueller told Congress Wednesday that he generally agreed that lies by Trump campaign officials and administration officials impeded his nearly two-year investigation.
Rep. Val Demings (D-Fla.) asked if other witnesses beyond those who were indicted during his probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election lied to his team of prosecutors.
"I think there are probably a spectrum of witnesses in terms of those who are not telling the full truth and those that are outright liars," Mueller responded, noting that it was fair to say there were "limits" on the evidence he could access as a result.
Denings followed up by asking if it would be accurate to say that "lies by Trump campaign officials and administration officials impeded your investigation."
"I would generally agree with that," Mueller said.

Trump campaign officials lied and were charged. This group-think thing you have is troublesome. Kinda like N. Korea. When you commit a crime the whole family goes to the work camp.
-
A prosecutor doesn't exonerate anyone.
And there is the spin we heard at the hearing, just now from trump's mouth, and will be hearing on right wing media and here on internet chat boards.
Extremely lame but that is the very best they have been able to manufacture, meaningless gobblety-gook intended to befuddle the less educated.
Seriously, this is a clue for republicans, if that is the best defense then you have lost. Save yourself, run away from the cult!
-

Not everyone has been charged, yet, and we have the evidence that trump routinely instructed his minions to lie.
You are going to tie yourself into a knot that the best surgeons will run away from. Just quit while you are behind. Dump trump and put the interests of the USA first.

Yes, you could be charged in circumstances like this.
What's the charge? He wanted me to rob a bank and I said no?
Can you think about blowing up the White House and get charged?

There comes a point to admit defeat and cut your losses, you are there. Dump trump, after him there will be other sleazy republicans you can support.

You don't go to a trial for an Article 15 unless you request a trial or court marshal. An Article 15 is a summary charge handled by the company commander.
-
What's the charge? He wanted me to rob a bank and I said no?
Can you think about blowing up the White House and get charged?
Are you claiming that many convictions of Mafia Don's were in error?
Yes, when a "boss" directs an underling to commit a crime,, that is a crime.
You know that. Hell, I bet you have supported it on several occasions.
Why not now? What is the difference? Brainwashing by the cult? You sold your soul to evil? Recently took a severe blow to your head? What?

That was clarified by Mueller himself in his opening statement before the intelligence committee as noted in reply 24.
A hypothetical.
And yes, a president can't be indicted until he is removed from office by impeachment. It's the constitution and the reason behind the OLC opinion.
-

That's when the Mafia underling actually commits the crime he was directed to do.
Evil is when one is charged with having a thought.
-
You don't go to a trial for an Article 15 unless you request a trial or court marshal. An Article 15 is a summary charge handled by the company commander.
A soldier has the right refuse to accept an Article 15 and instead request trial by court-martial. It is important to know that accepting an Article 15 is not an admission that you are guilty. ... A punishment by court-martial can be much more severe. so you will want to make this decision carefully.

What is is about trump that makes folks sacrifice their integrity in futile defense of him?
It is a cult, I can find no other explanation that makes any sense. Right wing media primed you folks for 30 years of brainwashing and this is the result of it, your "alternative reality".

Rossi contended that Trump could have been indicted a year ago if he were not in the White House. The former prosecutor emphasized that the statute of limitations for certain instances of criminal wrongdoing that the president has been accused of committing wouldn't expire once he leaves office.
“If it were Donald Smith instead of Donald Trump, Donald Trump would have been indicted a year ago for the campaign violations,” he told Hill.TV..."

I don't give a crap about Trump. He wasn't my first choice, although the alternative seems worse now. It's the deterioration of a judicial system that concerns me.
The reality is the courts exonerate, not prosecutors. I suppose we will not need a court in the statist utopia you're shooting for.

Yes, criminal law. If a doctor violates or certain other professionals violate ethics than they can be charged with a criminal charge.

I don't know about that unless a lack of ethics caused a law to be broken, such as fraud or violate a HIPPA law, etc.

Actually several places have it that if you violate ethics that you can be charged with a crime depending on the state you live in. If a state license is pulled than often other charges follow.
