This guy is in the race to boost his profile for a future run in ten years or so, I think he wants to be either Indiana governor or US senator and entering a pres primary like he done boosts name recognition esp locally in his environment...

Yes, his numbers are rising. I like the guy. He's certainly got the credentials to make an excellent choice and he's also very likable. He's young enough to be concerned about the future of our great country which makes him appealing. At this point, it's too early to get too interested however, I might appreciate him on the ticket. The only problem is his name. Lord have mercy, can you imagine how many ways that could get butchered?

it is too early, candidates do get a rise in numbers but it may fade later. I seen it too many times..

Mayor Pete is smooth, that's for sure.

Thing about him is is that  as POTUS he's just not electable  and even in the #2 slot he would be a drag on the top slot.

He would be useful in certain cabinet slots however and certainly has a bright future in politics in any role that involves compassion.

Not sure if this will post__still having problems here.

Not so sure it's 7 languages and a couple of them are essentially the same or close.

Fact is that he's a very smart guy who expresses himself in a way that few can.

He's got a problem though and it's one that for the time being can't be overcome. The good news is that Pete is young and has plenty of time to win the hearts and minds of at least a portion of the nations so called religious right an ultra conservatives.

The mission at hand__defeating Trump, retaking the Senate or both will require candidates that are attractive to Dems, Indy's and a decent share of R's.  Mayor Pete fails this test.

Hi Realtime,
If Buttigieg can produce an agenda that is solid enough for All of America without riding South Bend's *awesome recovery?

*The same recovery that all of us in the rust belt have experienced without his help.
If he can sell an agenda that the educated in America can see as intelligent and helpful for this country (all of this country), he's a sure fire winner.

In my opinion; in this day and age his being Gay can work for him as well as JFK'S being Catholic and Obama's being Black worked for them.
That's my opinion anyway.

I wish I had the time to be a daily poster here, or back on Topix. But I just don't. I try to read as much as I can here and other places.
That said I give a shoutout to Teaman. As much as I detest his politics a part of me understands them and he's always been a civil netizen, Hi Teaman.

Take care all

Other than being one of the wettest years I can remember Jamestown is doing OK.
They opened the National Comedy Center last year (which is fitting) :) and three new Hotels in the immediate area.
And at least a dozen new mom and pop bars and restaurants.

Where I live; Lakewood which is a suburb, Cummins Engine is going gangbusters and the same for The Southern Tier Brewing company, they've got some great brews and they are national/international now. Not sure if they've made it down to your way yet but if they have at least try an IPA, good stuff.

People learned to use tourism up here once the industrial age died, it had nothing at all to do with the Orange ones tax cuts. Actually his tax cuts hurt the majority of his followers, but I guess it's human nature to live and learn.

The weather is really messing with my riding and general lake stuff though.

Other than all that we probably still have more Rebel flags than you do, and of course the usual influx of migrant workers from Puerto Rico, who are taking all the jobs from the flag wavers.
God I can't wait till they Build That Wall! so they can stop the Puerto Ricans and find something new to cry about. LOL

PS: most all of the PR's come in on a plane but don't tell my neighbors

Sometimes you just have to smile and shake your head.

I was watching the local news when I was posting the other night. The AFL-CIO and a few NYC politicians are trying to push a bill to unionize farm help here. If they succeed it will be the end of every small farm in the state.

Anyway, our local news based in Buffalo sent a roving reporter out to gather public opinion. They managed to find a yokel with about 5 maybe 6 teeth and he did his best to explain how those illegal Puerto Ricans were asking for more money than they were worth and that is why the wall is so important!

I've heard several versions of the same story at different times from different people, this guy was dead serious.

Concerning the Wall, Arizona was swarmed with illegal imigrants, news stories showed how that state became ruined, vacant homes deteriating, crime, drugs, just an abundance of illegals. 30 or more people living in one home, causinf havoc everywhere. The locals
were not having it, and the illegals were kicked out. Now they spread all over the place from state to state.

I know, it is a serious concern here and in England and I suppose in Germany too.

Where I live we really haven't been affected by the illegals. I know people up here would start a revolt like you speak of in Az.

I wish I had an answer for it, moreover I wish a competent Politician would solve it.
That's what we elect them to do.

Fact check: How much does illegal immigration cost America? Not nearly as much as Trump claims.
"Frankly absurd," said one immigration policy expert of Trump's false claims that illegal immigration costs the U.S. more than $200 billion per year.

Trump says undocumented immigrants are an economic burden. They pay billions in taxes.
Unauthorized immigrants paid more than $20 billion in income taxes in 2015. They also fund Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security.

True. There is probably no way of determining an accurate accounting. Trump's figure derives from a report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. I  don't know if that's right wing, as you say, or not. That report was published in 2016. A review of the report indicates figures can be manipulated either way. I suppose the biggest cost is the driving down of wages.

I  don't know if that's right wing, as you say, or not. That report was published in 2016. A review of the report indicates figures can be manipulated either way. I suppose the biggest cost is the driving down of wages.

Afternoon, DuckieDoll. Where are you? It's still morning here.
Sorry about the mix up Teaman. I'm a dumb a ss before noon 😂 I'm EST, I was just to lazy to modify my afternoon, to morning LoL

No his type are very bad about thinking or checking, too much work...

It seems your type can't read. Whether it's 1995 or the 2017 report, illegals don't raise enough revenue to overcome their costs.

Trump used figures from the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine report. Take it up with them.

Fact check: How much does illegal immigration cost America? Not nearly as much as Trump claims.
"Frankly absurd," said one immigration policy expert of Trump's false claims that illegal immigration costs the U.S. more than $200 billion per year.
https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald-trump/fact-check-how-much-does-illegal-immigration-cost-america-not-n950981

Trump says undocumented immigrants are an economic burden. They pay billions in taxes.
Unauthorized immigrants paid more than $20 billion in income taxes in 2015. They also fund Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security.

Fact Sheet: Immigrants and Public Benefits

Illegal immigrants don't belong here, they are illegal, get a clue!

The GAO study in 1995 disagrees. I don't imagine it has gotten any better with the recent influx of illegals.

I believe the subject was Trump's claim that illegal immigrants cost us about 200 billion dollars a year.
Here's what you linked, a National Review piece

What Does the National Academies’ Immigration Report Really Say?

You linked a contributor at the National Review using 20 year old data to explain a current problem.

Who falls for sht like that? Borjas is an expert on the subject, certainly he didn't need to cherry pick
data to make his point.

2016 is only three years ago, Realtime. That was the National Review. It also indicated the data could be manipulated to favor either argument. There is no real way to determine the actual cost.

The 20 year old data was from the government's GAO.

First graph in your link

It turns out, however, that the newer immigrants are not assimilating quite as rapidly as earlier waves. Here’s the table from the report that documents the slowdown of assimilation:

(Table wouldn't link)

This table reports the percent difference in wages between specific immigrant waves and natives at different points in time. The data obviously show a lot of wage growth for immigrants who arrived in the 1960s and 1970s, but far less for immigrants who arrived in the 1980s and 1990s.

In this piece the author also considers generational costs for  illegal immigrants. What? The 2nd and  3rd generation would not be illegal as they were born here.

That whole piece is simply fun with numbers.

I agree with that. They can be manipulated to suit anyone's position. No one really knows the cost or lack of it.

Thing is that your link's author Borjas is an expert on the subject but the problem is that he written so many books/articles on the subject with so much data that he's constantly being cherry picked by the like of Fred Eibel and other rightwhack hustlers who are clearly in that game for the buck$.

Borjas wrote that the Marielitos drove down the average wage in the Miami area by over 5% and that data became gospel, across the board for all illegal immigrants and sticks to this day.

In 1980, 125,000 brokeazz illiterate Cuban's,  nearly half of them criminals were dumped in South FLA__duh__what would anyone expect to happen?  It was a one time event which perhaps still has a negative affect in certain sections of Miami, but is has exactly zero to do with illegal Mexicans or Hondurans harvesting vegetables in the Midwest or installing roofs in my county or yours.

True. Two Cubans put in a tile floor at my house here.

I remember Castro emptying out his prisons A lot of them ended up in New Joisey.

Update: Buttigieg is still the only candidate I will spend my vote on.

I know he's polling less than the big three that I won't even consider. But if he would be more assertive and maybe hire a Tailor or Stylist (whatever you call the person(s) who dresses; chooses the haircuts and puts on the makeup of public figure's) I believe his numbers would soar.
There's a lot to be said for 'a sharp dressed man', look to our past Presidents for validation of that.

And no, there's not a queer bone in my body it's more that I don't care.
For me it's about the Core Values of America and her future, he seems to get it a whole lot better than any of the other contenders.

My God, just listen to what All of the others are offering and the current Dems in power are doing - nothing but useless talk.
It's politics, I know but My God. What a joke.

I totally agree she did indeed, and she did it was poise. Her affiliation with John McCain and her experience should make her closer to the front runners. I think her biggest problem, until now, is she's just too nice. A lot of what happens boils down to how much money you have to spend. That and name recognition are what generally keeps the front runners in the front.

This is funny because my wife thought Klobuchar did really well and I still want Buttigieg, but whoever it is has to get a lot tougher than any of them are now.

I still remember the 2016 primaries as I watched in wonder as that orange blob systematically took apart some very seasoned opponents.
It's amazing that a flunky reality wannabe who I've never been able to stomach ran over everything in his way.

Hah!
Hey Realtime, I need to apologize because I saw this post awhile ago and made a mental note to reply and then I guess I lost my notes. :)

Lol It's a different type of fishing up here, not that deep sea charter stuff but we do get the diehard Musky guys and Bass pros who pizz and moan about everything.

The last couple of years its been this stupid blue green algae that's taking over most of the inland waters, at least up here.

The Kings of Fishers run out their boats and you'd swear it was the first time they've ever been in a boat.
They've been tearing up props like pieces of paper and running to the Marinas crying that's it our fault they need a prop, when all they really need to do is toss the stupid thing in reverse when they windup, but noo (the tourists do the same with rentals too).

Oh well keeps the local machine shops busy rebushing props.
Here's a link of what they fish for up here:
https://tinyurl.com/y5j3utfw

Personally I'm a walk the stream fisherman.
Find a nice spot with a deep hole and park my butt on the bank and toss a worm and bobber in, drink beer and wait for bass and be happy with the sunfish I toss back. Haven't had a chance in quite awhile though.

Sorry this is so long but I don't give myself enough time to keep up online and I wanted to tell you I told my wife we were riding down for bike week 2020 to make a couple of internet guys (you and Teaman) by us a dinner. :)

When she got done laughing she reminded me the last time we went down for that was 2000 and I swore for years after that never again would we leave out of here with 5 feet of snow on the ground, was a blizzard that year and I'm not any younger.

I'm positing that Bloomberg and Mayor Pete might be the ticket to beat Drumpf and Pence.

That's not saying a woman can't do the job or hold the job, but I suspect the current list of female candidates can't beat Drumpf and aren't interested in number 2.

I also think that Mayor Pete can't win at the top of the ticket for several reasons.
