What are some of y'alls fondest childhood memories?
-
One of mine is spending time climbing the hills of Kentucky, we spent many hours
in them.
-
What area of Kentucky roughly? I visited Mammoth Cave with my family a few years and had a great time.

I'm in Eastern Kentucky near Pikeville.

Mine was going to my Aunt's camp on Lake Superior.
-
Were the mosquito's bad Chanta?
-
We've all got a ton of them. I'm growing nostalgic as I age. LOL
I was raised on a farm and thought they'd work me to death, now I'd love to go back.
-
Yrs especially in the month of August!
-
Chanta, isn't there a town in Minnesota that gets infested with Mayflies every year? I saw it on TV once.
-
I'm not sure what city that would be but I did see them once when we headed 45 min south to a casino. They were layered on the windshield of every car and they were sweeping them off the parking lot!
-
Yuck!!!
-
It was disgusting!
-
Best memories was the good fresh food that we ate.
-
Absolutely TP!
-
Hog killing was a very special day,
-
Yes it was. We always did ours the second week of November. There ain't nothing like fresh cracklin'!
-
Yes it was. We always did ours the second week of November. There ain't nothing like fresh cracklin'!
We picked a real cold day, I hated scraping the hog but the fresh meat was delishious!
The cracklin's were good and the ham.
-
Scraping was always my job too. We'd always have a big chitlin supper as well.
-
The little kids would poke the guts, it was a very special day.
-
LOL.
-
Anybody swing on a gravevine, I did as a kid and am still alive! :)
-
I did! Me and my brother smoked rabbit tobacco too. It was awful. LOL
-

We smoked it too CW. haha
-
Dad raised a hog, he named it Shirley. When it came time to butcher it and put it in the freezer, none of us kids would eat it. Mom tricked my brother into eating some. I'll never forget him crying when he found out he ate Shirley. lol
-
Dad would never let us name our livestock for that exact reason. LOL
-
Growing up we lived on the banks of the Ohio River on the West Virginia side. Dad climbed up in a tree on the riverbank and tied a rope to an old tire for us kids to swing on. We had so much fun swinging out over the river.
We were never allowed to go near the river unless an adult was with us but one day I was sitting on the hill looking down on the river and right across in the distance I saw a bunch of boys splashing and swimming on the Ohio side. I was lonely and wanted to go swimming too. I got an old black innertube out of the basement, blew it up and away I went with no life jacket on or any adults in sight. About midways I hear an awful commotion coming from the riverbank. I look over my shoulder and there was dad waving his arms and screaming at me to come back. He kept saying, "A barge could have ran over you. A barge could have ran over you." I was probably 7 or 8 at the time. What kids won't do... smh
-
Great story!!
You know there's an old bluegrass song about the banks of the Ohio? It's about the 2 favorite subjects of old folk songs. Love and murder. lol
-
Is this it?
I met a little girl in Knoxville, a town we all know well
And every Sunday evening, out in her home I'd dwell
We went to take an evening walk about a mile from town
I picked a stick up off the ground and knocked that fair girl down
She fell down on her bended knees for mercy she did cry
Oh Willie dear don't kill me here, I'm unprepared to die
She never spoke another word, I only beat her more
Until the ground around me within her blood did flow
I took her by her golden curls and I drug her round and around
Throwing her into the river that flows through Knoxville town
Go down, go down, you Knoxville girl with the dark and rolling eyes
Go down, go down, you Knoxville girl, you can never be my bride
I started back to Knoxville, got there about midnight
My Mother she was worried and woke up in a fright
Saying "Dear son, what have you done to bloody your clothes so?"
I told my anxious Mother, I was bleeding at my nose
I called for me a candle to light myself to bed
I called for me a hankerchief to bind my aching head
Rolled and tumbled the whole night throught, as troubles was for me
Like flames of hell around my bed and in my eyes could see
They carried me down to Knoxville and put me in a cell
My friends all tried to get me out but none could go my bail
I'm here to waste my life away down in this dirty old jail
Because I murdered that Knoxville girl, the girl I loved so well
-
I'm in Eastern Kentucky near Pikeville.
I been to Pikeville countless times in past 15 years. I think it is an oasis in the middle of the coalfields with the infrastructure that it contains. I like the job of the Cut-Thru. It looks like the center of a metro area and even has an arena. There are thousands of people passing by that city from hundreds of miles away going to Ohio to TN, etc. it is the cleanest looking city I ever seen in coal country. Very busy without an interstate highway. 460 goes thru there, takes you East to Bluefield and Princeton, 119 to Charleston and 23 to Columbus and Asheville.
I remember visiting Pikeville when I was a kid and looked much different and cut- thru was reason why, I believe the train and river went thru town and the city was like Welch, a bit dirty because of coal. Did not return until my 30s.
Now Hazard, Ky looks like Welch on steroids with similar built streets with separate one way main streets and a bypass on top of the mountain and a flooding history...

TP, that's Knoxville Girl but they're pretty close to the same. LOL
I asked my love to take a walk
Just a walk a little way
And as we walk, oh, may we talk
All about our wedding day
Only say that you’ll be mine
In our home we’ll happy be
Down beside where the waters flow
On the banks of the Ohio
I held a knife against her breast
As into my arms she pressed
She said Willie, don’t you murder me
I’m unprepared for eternity
I took her by her lily white hand
And dragged her down that bank of sand
There I throwed her in to drown
I watched her as she floated down
Was walking home tween twelve and one
Thinkin’ of what I had done
I killed a girl, my love you see
Because she would not marry me
The very next morn about half past four
The Sheriff came knocked at my door
He said now young man come now and go
Down to the Banks of the Ohio

Little green apples.

Through the eyes of a child I remember Campbell, the Fuller Brush salesman, talking about his brushes to my maw maw out in the yard. Well paw paw was jealous of maw maw cause she was pretty I guess, paw paw picked up a pitchfork and ran after old Campbell chasing him all over the yard. The last time I saw him he was hiding behind a tree. True Story...

The milk man bringing milk, butter, eggs, cheese and orange juice.
-
I remember the smell of lilacs and honeysuckle growing on the riverbank and how I use to pinch off a honeysuckle blossom, bring it to my mouth, and blow on it to make it whistle.

Playing hide and seek.

The blizzard of 1978 and school was out for a month.
I remember that, at least one of the few times school was out all week when I went. Was never out a month but it was cold. Was like in 5th grade at that point. We had flood issues in that era as well

Our school bus was a pickup truck with a wooden shell built on the back and wooden seats.

Wow.
I admit the buses I rode were of modern stock. We were not rich but never seen myself as poor and I was always around color TV and had the modern conviences of the day etc. never seen an outhouse either and had outside contact. My parents had much less, I guess I benefitted more from technology in that sense.

The big buses couldn't navigate the hollers so the routes were contracted out. We had no tv most of the time.

I accidentally shot my brother with a BB gun, gosh I was in trouble. I was maybe 9 or 10, too young to be handling one
-
We would have BB gun and pine cone wars. LOL

After I shot my brother there was no way I was picking up that bb gun again.. lol
Yes, we had pine cone fights too.
-
We had clay/mud ball fights, one team would defend the barn and the other would attack and yes it hurt!

I bet that did hurt like paintball but back then we didn't have paintball.

We would have dirt clod and corn cob fights, also rotten tomatoes. I grew up on a 49 acre farm, helped with tobacco, hay, had a horse to ride and a lake to fish out of. We weren't rich as my father was a teacher and they didn't get paid near what they make now but we never knew we weren't poor either.
-
40 acre not 49 acre.
-
When I was a kid I had never eaten a tv dinner. One day my uncle bought my grandmother an upright freezer and filled it with tv dinners. Man, I loved 'em

We had/have about 150 acres but mostly hillside so we had plenty of play room.

We would have those at aunt's house. Everything was from the garden and it was beef every night. True story, when I got married, I didn't know we couldn't have steak or some type of beef every night. We raised our own beef. Sunday meals were always fried chicken, roast or a ham. And we would have the preacher and his family over.

Our family had beef almost every night except on Sunday then it was fried chicken after church. I remember having a lot of beans, potatoes and cornbread. My poor dad worked all day then came home mowed and worked in his garden till dark. I sure miss him and that garden.
-
I've traveled for work of and on for years and have had the pleasure of eating at some of the finest restaurants in America but at the end of the day you can't beat beans, cornbread, stewed potatoes and greens. Oh and a big ole glass of sweet tea!

That's right, Cemetery Walker! <3
-
I complained about eating beans, potatoes and cornbread, my mom said be grateful you have that because there was many times all I had was a big old hunk of cold cornbread for lunch at school. To this very day I think of her when I have cornbread.
-
Cemetery Walker, I just love this thread!! It's my favorite... <3
-
I remeber hog killing time in late Nov or early Dec, wasnt always a pretty sight but we were sure gald to pack the smokehouse full, I remember it also meant deep fried cracklings, they were kinda like pork rinds you buy in the store today but much better fresh and all natural, no artificial flavor needed.
-
I remember the bean stringing and breaking but not so fondly.
There were bushells and bushells of beans to do!
-
Snap beans and shell peas!! We used to churn a lot of butter too. The adults would start and get tired of it then make us kids do it. LOL

Been there CW, wehad free range chickens and when a hen would start cackling my mom would say go find that nest. Sometime there would be 12 eggs in them.We had nests in the barn but some wouldn't use them.

We had several who refused to use a nesting box and we'd have to search in the bushes for them! You always knew what was going on when the cackling started!
-
Fresh chicken for Sunday dinner, my mom would have an 8 pound bucket on her arm with cracked cone and feed the chickens, She would grab one put it under her arm until she had 3 young fryers for dinner.

Oh my goodness, I absolutely love this thread! Y'all have the best memories and you've all been blessed beyond measure. I'm afraid I might be a little envious. :(

Everyone's story is different and unique. Fire away!!

My uncle told the story when he was a boy on his way home from school he came upon a racer snake on the dirt road. He ran and ran as fast as he could go, that snake hot on his heels. He said by the time he made it home the snake had beat him there.
-
A bumble bee got after me one morning, chased me completely around the house. I ran as fast as my little legs would go but I had to slow down long enough to run up the porch steps and open the screen door, that's when it finally got me. I walked over to my grandma's house screaming to high heaven. She sat me down at the kitchen table, put baking soda paste on the sting and fed me fresh corn on the cob out of the garden. Man, that corn was good... lol

LOL. There used to be a huge honey bee nest in the base of a tree right next to a road where we used to ride our bikes. We'd have to haul ass by to avoid getting stung. Even doing that, they would chase us for a bit!
-
Yellow jackets were the worse!

I use to spend my time over on my grandparents farm..helping pap-paw in the garden and mam-maw canning..stringing green beans and breaking them for canning...always had a bag full of fresh garden stuff to bring home with me...Had an outside john we used..yep Princess used one...LOL...then when I got married my inlaws done the same but they killed hogs and I was like dont tell me you all are gonna eat that right from the hog..until I ate it then I was like wow I really cant believe I ate that fresh..LOL..but man it sure was good..the tenderloin is what we ate with biscuits..yes yummy...I also helped with that..I sure miss those days..

Did y"all ever roll up your britchey legs and catch crawdeads in the creek?
I remember doing that, you had to be quick because they could really scoot going backwards and the big ones hurt when they pinched your finger. I remember dropping ants in a doodle bug hole and watching them disappear so quick you didnt see what got em.
-
I rolled my britches legs up to wade in the creek...LOL

Indeed I do Pete, I had 10 siblings. I remember popcorn balls made with fresh molasses
-
Fresh gingerbread.
-
Fresh bread, cakes, or pies. Yummy!
-
Staying at my grandparents house in the summer. Going fishing with my grandfather. Staying in his cabin on the Greenbrier River.
-
Sadly I never knew a grandfather and only one grandmother.
-
I remember rock climbing and scaling the cliffs on Bear Pen creek, It was our playground, I remember waiting for the flying squirrel to sail out of its nest in the top of the tall pines and then climbing up to check out its babies, more times than not mama squirell was still home and she was very protective of her babies. I went back to the Bear Pen cliffs as an adult only to find that strip mining had basically turned most of it into a frikin' cow pasture.
-
Paw paw had a cow he would milk. He'd give the milk to families with children to feed. Maw maw would churn butter to give them also. People didn't call paw paw by name, they called him the man with the cow.
-

I always said that my late mom made the best popcorn balls. Divinity at Christmas time and the weather had to be right for that.
Fishing in our lake with a cane pole caught 3 bass and 13 bluegill one time with that.

Good morning all. Funny, Pete and SD. He put some holes in the clothes but at Job Corp they give him uniforms and the outfits to wear so he won't get holes in his clothes.

Huntin and fishin with Pa
Going out picking huckleberries and choke cherries with Ma, Pa, my three sisters and one brother then coming home and making choke cherry jam and huckleberry pie.

The small kids had to clean the mason jars at canning time, our hands would fit inside.

A friend and I would help at the local bakery and for helping them out we’d each get one loaf split top bread with butter baked inside.
Mmmmmmmmmmmm! Nothing better!
Except for homemade bread.

Lol, we taught our grandmother to not listen in on our conversations after we said some sexual stuff on it. Hahaha and she told my mom who knew we did it just to make her get off the phone.

Well there were always consequences for my actions, but I liked to test my limits in Junior High.
I grew up with only brothers, so they were a bad influence on me.
Growing up wasn't easy with them around.
I excelled in my Senior High, and concentrated on some finer things in life.
Nice to see you posting, PurpleLady.

Me too. My Dad ran a hydro line to it because we were scared of the dark and we wanted to cook breakfast in the morning like the Big People did.
We spent our entire summers sleeping out there.
Of course, my brothers would sneak in on Girls Night Only just to see who I had over.

The day I came home from school (2nd grade) and found that Ma was driving Pa to the hospital 30 miles away and all of the windows blown out of the house.
My brother had put a almost empty gas can next to the open motor washing machine.
Pa came in and started the washer and "boom" the gas can exploded.
It blew him out of the laundry room...through the kitchen and into the kitchen sink.
He ended up with five broken ribs, his arm broken in two places and all the hair on his head and face burned off.

Wow! He was lucky to be alive!
Yes he was!
Thankfully he was standing to the side of the washer and the shrapnel missed him...otherwise he would have been sliced to pieces.
-
He was lucky. My dad who knew better was tinkering on the tractor, he forgot to set the brakes on it and it rolled over on him. He was very lucky it didn't kill him. He looked like he had gone 5 rounds with Mike Tyson.
-
This is the time of year we would start clearing our gardens, we had lots of them.
We were a large family and we had to grow our own food. All the fields were plowed
by mule and us kids were the labor force. We had to get up early to do hoe and my
brothers and I would count the rows and devide them up. My older brother would finish
first and sit and laugh at us because the sun would be hot as hell by them.
-
Well, my comfort zone reaches a limit.
We still had to pee in the bushes, tho.
Well you can't have everything. :o
-
Standing at the table to eat, enough chairs wouldn't fit around it so the little kids stood.
Why not take your plate and sit elsewhere you say, because you need to stay close to the food.

I'm very happy both of our "Pa's" made it through and were there to raise us the rest of our formative years PA...
Pa lived until 89, brother 99, Ma 2004...
I miss them all...!

I remember travelling to the Eagle River Valley of B.C. to spend holidays with my Grandmother (father's side). A town of 300 people at the time. My Grandma did laundry for the Canadian Pacific Railway Crew & worked in the local Post Office to provide for her family during the days. My Grandfather died at an early age from a tragic accident when my father was only seven. They both arrived from England, along with a friend.
The space in the home was limited, and I wondered how we all fit in the two-bedroom house. I had to sleep with Grandma. The boys slept on the floor in the living-room. Mom & Pa slept on a hide-a-bed. The friend, Uncle Jack, occupied the 2nd bedroom.
There was always a fire kept burning to keep the home warm as that was the only source of heat.
I thought it funny at the time - Tea was always brewing & sipped from the saucer only.
Food was cooked on a woodstove, and the only washroom facilities were that of an outhouse.
Laundry was done by washboard. I kid you not..
I remember the snow being so high that it reached the top of the windows. The men would wake early to shovel a path to the outhouse.
Bathing was done from boiling water on the woodstove and put in a stand-up bathtub. Us kids would draw straws as to who went first..
At night we played board games - Go Fish, Old Maid & Monopoly by candlelight as the adults strummed away on their musical instruments.
And yet some today, still complain about having to take laundry from the automatic washer to put it in the automatic dryer.
This life made me appreciate the simpler things in life.

Far too many don’t appreciate anything cause many have had very sheltered lives. This is why it never takes much to please me since I learned to appreciate what little I had when young.
This somewhat reminds me of my past.
Thanks for sharing.

My best friend's parents were building a new home, but before they could get started they had to tear down the old homestead so what did they do? They moved everything to the barn. Furniture, clothing, everything. In each stall they set up a room, livingroom, kitchen, 5 bedrooms and a porta potty outside. They lived that way for most of the summer. They took showers at the grandparents house. It was pretty cool actually. I spent a couple of nights camping out there... I'm surprised the mosquitoes didn't eat them alive, but they didn't.
-
I remember the all nite skates lots of fun rollerskating.
-
A place like one of these IslandGurl?
Not quite.
There isn't any snow..
However, I do believe I conceived my first child in a place much like the one you posted there (out in an open, secluded field but amongst flowers) - Pink Mountain, I recall fondly..
Ever been there?

I appreciate your life story because it reminds me of mine. Our home had little water preasure... so we all could only take one bath a week in 2 inches of water drawn in the cast iron tub. The water well was shallow and produced little. As we drew the water we would wash our hair. The rest of the family who followed had to wash hair and bathe in the remaining water in the tub. Once a month we each might take turns to be first.
I thought this was poor conditions until Mom told of her life. Grandparents had no running water... so all took turns taking a bath sitting in a galvanized steel 3 ft round tub. They did have a fairly advanced outhouse to use... it was a two hole out house. Most only had a one hole out house like my Aunt next door.
My Grandpa fell on the ice one night walking to the out house... he died later from shock from the resulting broken hip. I hated how soggy the toilet paper was in the outhouse... but I geuss it was better than the corn cobs they used to use. The Sears & Robuck cataloug would only last so long... then all that was left were corn cobs and leaves.

Yes, I remember well the soggy toilet paper & hope to never meet such a fate ever again during this modern life-time of mine.. lol
I wish you and your Mrs. well..

Please... it may be my upbringing from my strict Mennonite mother... but I fail to accept praise well. Please, I thank you... but I cannot hear praise... it does not set well with me. I am not worthy of praise so I cannot hear it. Thanks though. I & the Mrs. will continue here because we know this is where we belong and are to speak.

You speak as if you are asking your parents to go out when you are actually all grown up and can venture whenever and wherever your heart takes you.
I have no no beef, no quarrels, in fact, I’ve always enjoyed you and the Mrs. so worries my good friends and permission is not ever needed.
You and the Mrs have a sweet day and I’ll see you on the boards. 😉

I read you and your pretty cowface, each & every morning on Blue's & Sly's forum, regardless as to whether I feel like posting at the particular time or not.
Perhaps, I'll share another adventure of mine when I feel compelled to do so, and am somewhat more relaxed.
I have to be in that zone to share with another when choosing to do so.
It appeared to me that, perhaps, you & Cyg may have some differences.
I don't like conflict with anyone..
I'm here to have fun, share a few laughs, and relax with the members after some gruelling graveyard shifts - that is all..

This reminds me of a story of my dear ol mum. My brother and I were little kids running around the house playing cowboys shooting each other with our cap guns. We both got rather involved and caught up in the game and we ended up shouting at each other yelling loudly "I'am going to kill you!"
Mom happened to over hear this and here she came stomping into the room... she grabbed us each by one arm and drug us up stairs to our bedroom. Then she made us neal down next to our bed and and made us both pray to God forgiveness.
We never said that again ever... but we did have a bit more fear and respect for mum.
-

Perhaps, I read it wrong.
In any event, I deleted my profile from TP'S forum shortly after receiving the typical response I usually do when visiting one of your own hometown threads - simply stating and hoping for its return to some form of normalcy - namely, Spin The Bottle - which brought the usual arrogant replies in tow with the same characters.
However, I reinstated my profile, afterwards and will visit the threads that bring joy to me rather than posters that choose to seek otherwise.
I will continue to read you and Mrs. Cowface along those journeys, wherever that may bring the each of us which leaves very few threads to post on..

This reminds me of another childhood story... Mom & Dad went to visit a lady at her home and took my brother and I with them. We were about age 5 and we sat quietly while the adults talked.
Out of the blue I spoke to the lady and said "Got anything to eat?" The lady said back "Not much to eat here maybe some bread". Mom said to the lady "No don't bother, they are fine".
But Mom had quite a bit more to say when we got back to the car!. In the car Mom lit into me saying "You don't ever, ever beg or ask for food when visiting at other peoples homes!" I kept my mouth shut... wanting to say "But I was hungery".
-
wow CF...you would have gotten fed at my house...LOL
-
One year my brother and I got Christmas and Halloween confused. We told Mom & Dad that it was Halloween Eve and that children were allowed to go trick or treating both nights... which we did. We got a few strange looks when neighbors answered doors two nights in a row for our "Trick or Treat!".
-
Just play and have fun IG...it all good go with the flow....enjoy...(hugs)...

I'm certain that will keep both our flows going in the right direction for all parties concerned..

My childhood; I grew up in a family of sociopaths (didn't we all)
Punishment was usually swift and extreme for the usual mundane "bad" things kids do. One day, around the age of 8, I was hanged out of a second story window for arguing with my sibling by a parental figure. Made to hang on for dear life for what seemed to be an eternity out of an old Victorian era house, you know the ones with the 12 foot ceilings making the 2nd story height seem that more devastating to a young child if he were to fall.
You might be asking, why would this be a 'fond' memory? In short, the parental figure didn't let go.
In that moment I understood there was some good buried within all that 'psychotic' rage induced, generational abuse passed down from parental figure to offspring that went back in my family line as old as the stories themselves are told about it. A bit of good that was realized one day when this parental figure gave their life to the Christian God, Jesus, a few short years later. Still fallible and flawed, such is the human condition, but a total and marked change from the monstrous person that once was.
Ah, good times.
(Drinks are on me to whoever read that first paragraph in their best Dr. Evil inner monologue voice)

Hey there WLU... long time no see. I have missed you from the old Topix days. Glad you found your way here. Your writing is as impressive as always. You had me entranced from the start with 12 foot ceilings. I know those very same tall windows you speak of reaching to the ceiliing.
The very fact that the parental figure hung you out the window... but did not let you go... is a pivotal fact. You were loved then... as you are here among friends.

Mr. Cowface,
As always, your stories are also a pleasure to read. I am always enthralled with your tales of hitchhiking across country or living in a colony. I try to imagine and visualize the sights, sounds and experiences one would have on such grand adventures. Like you, I once drove across country to meet a girl (Ohio to Spokane, Washington). I drove 33 hours, 2,100 miles non-stop on sheer willpower.
Ah, the things you do when you're young, in love and a lot less cynical.
How is Mrs. Cowface and you planning to do a garden this year? I thought about growing some Tobacco this year.

Good morning everyone...
-
well IG I am sorry you feel this way..I do hope you stay and play with us on the threads...
When I first decided to join TP'S forum I thought it would remain a private site without opening it up to allow anonymous users which in my opinion was one of the biggest downfalls of Topix as a whole - that and the lack of fair moderation skills/practices.
I come here to only find the exact same thing happening here on the Guest Forum.
Lots of fighting, bickering and trickery.
I'll be sticking around for a bit yet to see where all this goes.
Happy posting, Princess.

I do hope you stay IG..but I also understand...I am just posting and playing...I havent seen much bickering...I did once but it got solved...

No it didn't get solved because names/conflicts between posters from Topix continues to be discussed on other threads and carried directly from there to here onto Texas Pete's forum.
Perhaps, some enjoy for that drama to continue - most posters, however, do not.
Not a good or wise move at all, if one truly wishes for harmony & peace to take place here - that is.
And, I'll remain vocal on this topic until it stops completely..
-
Good Morning, Cowface.
Yes, I'm aware of the book, but he didn't actually sail all alone - he had two kittens aboard.💞
I forgot about the kittens, but I think he met a girl on one of the islands. Didn't he take her with him sailing on the end of his voyage? Not sure; I read the book over 45 years ago when I was hitchhiking through the Florida Keys. His journey really inspired me on my own journey.

I think you're right and maybe eventually got married? I am going to have to read the book again or look up the movie on Netlflix. Thanks!

Mine, too.
Yes, he arrived home with a wife & daughter.
So romantic and such an inspiring, true love story - I have a wee tear in my eye.
Much like your own and your pretty Mrs. Cowface's personal adventures and love story..
You both are truly a blessing to read - it just makes my day..

I'm grateful in life to have found both my birth-parents while they were still both alive.
Upon our reunion, I came to soon find out that my birth-father's fav. song was one of my own father's fav. that raised me as his own.
Connie Francis was played often in my household, and I remember both my parents waltzing in our home to this same song growing up.
A bluebird right out of a tree..

My childhood; I grew up in a family of sociopaths (didn't we all)
Punishment was usually swift and extreme for the usual mundane "bad" things kids do. One day, around the age of 10 and like many times before, a butchers knife was forced into my hand and was made to hold it to my parental figures throat who was screaming they had enough of me and my siblings usual childhood rivalry. And that I should just slice it, ending them.
You know, one of those long 10 inch butcher knives used for carving up the family turkey with on Thanksgiving Day. A relative small sword to a 10 year old boy. Unable to release the knife from my hand or move it away without cutting them, as the knife blade was already thrust firmly into their indented throat. I stood there still, unable to move, sheer terror gripping tight as my eyes filled with tears.
On this one particular occasion unlike the many times before, like a fog slowly creeping into view and accumulating into a dense cloud where you are no longer to distinguish anything right from wrong with clarity, a thought entered my mind. Small at first, then begin to grow with every second under the crushing weight of the situation and of the verbal assault being inflicted. I thought I'd do it. For a moment I was calm, readied and emotionless, willing to do the one thing no parent would imagine any child being capable of. Calculating every possible scenario of going to prison to botching the action, and in turn, being killed by my parental figure.
Needless to say, those type of extremely bizarre incidents never happened from that day forth. I don't know if the parental figure seen that look in my eye, that they pushed to far, or came to the conclusion their behavior was indeed psychotic. And not justifying their actions, they themselves grew up in a far worse home than I ever did, and just stopped also knowing what they're putting me through.
One probably would be asking about now, how is this a 'fond' childhood memory;
Well, I think one could look back knowing the 'bad' in our childhood influences us just as much as the 'good' and what we do with that, defines us who we are. And looking back, if that was what was destined to happen, making me a better person, I'd gladly endure it again a thousand times over. What happened in the past made me a better father when the time came to raise my own child. One, which mind you, I never had to really ever punish besides the only one time I can remember- swatting very lightly at back of the diaper, which the sound probably was more frightening than anything. I'm probably really over protective than anything- but I digress.
Abuse tends to make one more self aware of life, actions and consequences at a earlier stage- least it did for me. People do this somewhat naturally, but I think people don't stop and realize their everyday actions effects on others. Most people meander around in life like they're in Wal-mart, taking up the whole isle why others are trying to get around them. Oblivious unaware and uncaring or they hide behind moral ambiguity as an excuse.
This also highlights the fact that even love, a child's innocent untaught love, has it's boundaries and that should be a warning to not push someone, anyone, who loves you too far. To take care of that love, to nurture it and not take it for granted as it is truly special.
-
WLU that was a breathtaking account from your childhood memories. I was wondering about the 10 inch butcher knife... did it also have a wooden handle beautiful brown in color like oak?
-
I was raised in a strict Penecostal home...dragged to church every time the doors were open but you know now looking back I am so glad I was..I am surprised the way my parents were that they let me get married at such an early age..but hey I am still here..had alot of rough edges..but I am still here..

We had two actually. One a dark brown oak/mahogany color the other a lighter shade of brown, more than likely pine or a maple.

I grew up next door to one of those strict type Pentecostal churches. They were pretty neat in some ways and would invite us Protestant kids to their Bible school. My parents are buried in the cememtery that the Pentecostal started. It is lovely and in the country. My mom's favorite tree was a dogwood but she never could get one to live on our farm. She and my father are now buried under 2 dogwoods, one pink and one white. My siblings and I know she would have liked that.

We had two actually. One a dark brown oak/mahogany color the other a lighter shade of brown, more than likely pine or a maple.
I like those deer antler knife handles, but I've never had one.

They look really nice, but I always went for functionality over looks.
I would say I helped my uncle sell them kinds of knives at Flea markets, but I was mostly a silent investor as I was too busy working. Him being a disabled Vet had more time to drive around.
I did however get into buying scrap gold back in 2008-2011. He use to own a coin shop in the local town way back in the day and started to teach me how to grade coins.
Decent money to make in our free time buying and selling gold/silver/coins for a profit. We probably made @ 15K each a year doing it casual out of his house. Not too shabby for this low cost of living area for "play " money.

Very cool money making. Case makes some great pocket knives with antler/bone handles with same great look and more functional.

I have one of those deer antler knives that my brother in law made for my husband and I. It is the sharpest knife I have ever owned. He also makes black powder muzzle loader guns and has a huge waiting lists.

Back in the day I enjoyed old school chewing gum like Black Jack, Clove, Teaberry, and Beaman's... but now I have not chewed one single stick of gum in probably 30 years. Go figure.

I used to chew Hubba Bubba or Bubble Yum. I think Hubba Bubba was those little squre type gum and had a comic inside.

Yep you are correct. I did the same... loved those bubble gums. For a different twist on bubble gum I would buy a pack of baseball cards which came with a slab of bubble gum thin shaped like a baseball card. It was good too.

LOL.. I am so glad you said that! I too threw out the baseball cards just to chew the bubble gum... but I didn't want to say that because boys were supposed to be interested in baseball and collect the cards. I enjoyed playing little league baseball... I just did't care to watch it on TV... too slow and boring a game for me. LOL Thanks!

Boys don't have to do manly things at all. I had a childhood friend that was a little boy who liked to play with dolls, we had alot of fun together, and liked to rife our big wheels together in his basement, true story. So you don't like to watch baseball on tv, sometimes it is slow, but I never watch basketball, that's the only sport I never watch.

I always liked Fresh n up.gum where some.type of liquid juice would squirt in your mouth when you chewed it. I also always like those big sour type suckers, they came in green apple, grape and cherry.

I never set foot in a church until I was 17 at a cousins wedding, as for the baseball card
gum in later years it got so hard you couldn't chew it.

I remember my Grandpa chewed Beachnut chewing tobacco down on the farm.

Mom used to let us lick the beaters or spoon after she made cookies or cakes. When she made pie crust she would save any extra leftover pie dow and she would roll it out and sprinkle it with cinnamin and sugar... and then cut into long strips and roll them up with the cinnamin and sugar all inside. Then she buttered and baked the roll ups along with the pie. When done she gave us the roll ups as a treat. What a great Mom! ;D

That sounds really good. My grandmother made the best homemade strawberry cake, homemade grape juice and at Christmas time a float that sometimes you drank it and other times you had to eat it with a spoon. She also made a really good rhubarb pie. I miss those treats. My grandfather was the cook in that house.

Ah yes, rhubarb pie. Sometimes would make rhubarb pie with a twist by adding a pack of strwberry jellow to the filling... yum. Also made tomato jelly with tomatoes and strawberry jellow. I loved Grandma's homemade watermellon rhine sweet pickles... the secret to that recipie is cinnamin spice and allspice.

did you save the recipes CF...they sound amazing...

Yes thanks, after Mom passed away they devided out all of Mom's things. I only asked for one little thing... her recipie box. To me that was the prized possession of all!. I held on to the treasure trove of all Mom's recipies for 20 years. Then about 5 years ago I passed it on to my brother to hold for the next 20 years. We still always share the reicpies back and forth whenever either of us want something. Brother talked about printing them all off, but hasn't yet. The Mrs. and I were just talking today about asking my brother for my Mom's pie dow recipie because she had the best buttery flaky crust pie dow recipie which beats every resteraunt. Mom actually was the pie baker at a resteraunt for years... and used all her own recipies. Love ya Mom!

Anyone ever hear of "Preddles"? If so do you have a recipie for it to share? Preddles is and old German ground meat. It is usally made from scraps when butchering hogs and beef kinda like sausage. It includes beef heart primary and meat scraps pork & beef. The main ingredient is oatmeal and meat kinda like meatloaf. The ground meat mixture is seasoned I think mainly with salt, pepper, and a lot of allspice. This then is spread thin in a frying pan and fried till crispy mainly to be served for breakfast, but good anytime. It is so delisious it will give you an orgasim! LOL

Interesting! I will have to try tomato gravy on grits. I eat tomato gravy over bisquits or rice. I also love hamburger gravy over plain old white bread... or bisquits... or anything. You are making me hungry.

My aunt in Georgia always made tomato gravy but then they also eat grits 3 times a day. I got white beans with ham hock slow cooking in the crockpot and going to make some cornbread in iron skillet to have with it. I also made a yellow cake to go with that. That is going to have chocolate frosting on it. Lol.

My mom saved all left overs no matter how small... then she put a variety of leftovers into used tin TV dinner trays and froze them for another day. She actually saved used tin TV dinner trays and washed them to be used again for left overs. When she later served us a dinner of her homemade left over frozen TV dinners nobody knew what they were going to get. Bless her heart.

Catching up a bit here...
Grandpa on Ma's side was known to sneak a plug of chew out in the barn ~ only thing is gramps was a good Mormon.
Grandma and Grandpa also drank coffee :o another no-no.
Can't say anything for gramps on pa's side as he died when pa was eleven.
As far as rhubarb, one of my favorite childhood memories is grabbing the salt shaker and heading out to the garden to grab a fresh stock, pealing it, salting it and eating it.

My Grandparents similar to yours, but mine were very strick Mennonite. No one would smoke in front in front of Grandma and Grandpa had to go out back to the barn for a chew or a smoke. We drove by the old home place the other week... the house is long gone, but Grandpa's barn is still there.

Grandmas place on pa's side is long gone...it was built by pa and his two brothers and looked much like the first homestead I posted here awhile back.
A little backstory...
As I said, pa's dad died when he was eleven in Georgia. Grandma with the help of her brother (who had already moved here) then packed up her six kids and moved to the mountains of Idaho in which most of her descendants still reside.
The farm where ma grew up is still there (along the Portneuf River) but looks nothing like it did back in the day.
The barn is long gone and the log house has been covered over with siding and added on too.

My avatar is of our family farm. It got sold this past year, so all I have is the memories of the place. No one it seems wanted to live there since young ones don't want to live in the country.

That is sad, but a beautiful picture of farm. I miss my Grandparents farm and my Great Grandparents farm up the road too. It is very sad... I know how you must feel. All we can do now is drive by and look at the place. The three houses I grew up in are now owned by others. I drive by all on occasion and remember.

Yeah, my parents are buried across the road from the family house. I don't know that I can go to the cemetery with the family farm being across and strangers living there.

Your picture icon of family homestead speaks to me of your sadness. I feel it. Continue to cherrish your family memories. Think of your Grandma sepperating the egg yoke from the whites when baking. Remember her sifting the flour in her kitchen... smell the pears and apples in the pantry. They are with us in our memories as is the old home place.

I would dearly love to go to Milledgeville Ga and try to find my grandfathers grave.
Unfortunately health reasons prohibit that now and I should have done it years ago when I was "younger"
Please don't let the fact that someone else now owns the property dissuade you from visiting PL.
(yes I know it's hard)

Funny you should mention visiting old family property... once when I returned to Ohio to visit family... I learned that Grandpa's family farmhouse and farm buildings were up for sale. Although I had no money to buy, I called the realator and asked for a viewing like a potential buyer. I had the best walk around the whole place and saw so many things from my memory. I was very impressed when I walked in Granpas grainery I saw writtten upon the wooden walls inside where Grandpa had written on the walls the different grain prices over the years... this was something I had never seen before. Grandpa had inscribed on the grainery walls in pencil all kinds of farm notes. They were still there from many many years ago.

I won't. Actually the people who own the family house are a young couple with kids. I am glad to see that as it was meant to be a house with kids in it. The other acreage was divided up and some people who wanted to start a vineyard is doing that and the other part has cattle ran on it as that is what we did. We never thought of doing a vineyard even though we raised grapes and blackberries so in the end the land sustains those who wanted it.

I'm glad to hear that PL and if it's of any consolation at least the land wasn't bought up by one of the big farm conglomerates or god forbid subdivided for condos and parking lots.

No, most of the people out there have farms and it is too far from town for condos and parking lots.

I liked hanging out on Grandpa's farm it had a still an old functioning windmill that pumped water into the water trough for the cows on one side and hogs on the other.

I really don't know if I should post another pic...I guess if Pete gets mad he can PM me and tell me not to do it again and I'll take it down...Anywho

I'm sure the original photographer would be quite pleased with your comments ~ although I did have to do a little work on the copy I have to bring it back to my liking.
Tried to post another of ma and three of my siblings arriving at gram and gramps farm in the 40's but it looks like I've reached my limit (again) for pics this month.
BTW my aunts and uncles always told me I looked just like him...Take away the scruffy beard and they might be right lol.

I don't think that we were ever having a conflict when it was just purely a friendly discussion, but I guess there are people who will always take it in another form where none exists. I don’t know.
I am not here for conflict, but I do as some others here when they come with their powerful egos, just to yank our chains, and solely for the sake of their entertainment has got to stop.
I like the truth to all things and will speak my thoughts on the subject, and be respectful when others wish to remain blind is of no consequence, but when they are being disrespectful towards myself or anyone else they don’t agree with to then wonder why they get no respect back is outrageous when all they need do is look in a mirror to see who is actually responsible.
I don’t like a pompous jerks and will give them what’s due, accordingly.
I like most of you here. Cowface Mrs Cowface, you, Pete (I don’t have the time to name them all), but I find most of you to be very responsible, enjoyable and respectful people and love reading your insights on life and other topics that progresses thought and amusement to the peaks of our universe of understanding, and without the subjective bias that many are brainwashed with who aren’t interested in the truth to all things.
I came here with the inclination that it was to be fun, opinionated, relaxed and reasonable. But found out just how dishonest it has been is why I care not to discuss my life on an open forum ... just to have another use that against me for profit, or the sake of their own amusement.
This is why I’m careful because even I was nearly ruined because of someone else’s irrelevant minds of irresponsible actions and behaviors.
My apologies for the interject friends and have a great rest of your day.

Hi Cyg! No worries. I saw that comment too back then and wondered where it came from. From my perspective we're all good. Carry on my friend...

Thank you so much Mr Cowface! I have always enjoyed your and the Mrs, you’re both funny as the dickens, witty, and are always such sweet people.
I love you both and hope the remainder of your lives are full of joy, with lots of freedom, and a boatload of friendships to come.
Thank you so much my good friend! 🙂

Thanks Cyg... I am always astounded by your intelligence. I enjoy reading your exchanges with others. I can't converse at that level... so sometimes I pretend. LOL The pretty little Mrs. and I are concerned and worried and praying for Princess so we have not been doing much on our thread until she returns.

That’s the humor and wit I always love reading from you and the Mrs! 🤣
Thank you for that... I don’t see myself in that light, but I know I am not without some measure of intellect. lol!
I believe that the issue of Princess Hey was resolved as of yesterday, and according to IslandGurl, I think, she’s with he daughter and they have gone for an outing together.
Now that’s love. ❤️
So you need not worry about her my friend.
You and the Mrs take care and I’ll see you around the threads.
But as of now, I have a car to finish cause I’m putting in two new tirods, plus I’m waiting for someone to chat with while I’m doing so.
Have fun buddy. 🙂

Agreed. She was just concerned for herself and any other parties involved. So I view it as only a mistake that we all will generally make at one point or another.
No biggie - I too have misinterpreted other people's responses and felt bad once I found out the truth ... and then apologies were given.
We all do this.
Have a great day PL. 🙂

Well, I just thought I would explain myself here so there were no misunderstandings down the road.
Have a happy day 🙂

this reminds me of a story I've told before. My brother and I were playing cowboys with our cap guns and running around the house shooting each other and yelling "I'm going to kill you!". We were just playing, but Mom heard this and mistook this to being serious and not play... she drug us both by our ears to our bedroom and made us both kneel down at our bed and pray for forgivness. Mom said she didn't ever want to hear us say that again... and we obeyed... although as teenagers we nearly killed each other in many real fights... but we never used those forbidden words. My brother and I are very close today.

Sounds like the same thing we told our son today after he has been without his cell phone for almost 3 weeks that saying his phone was going to blow up might not be what he should say. I knew what he meant but told him these days you don't say stuff like that.

One of my fondest memories with my daughter when she was a baby:
I would gather up my fishing rod - small picnic basket - set up her playpen.
Fish all day - of course, there was a limit, so..
I'd race home with my catch of the morning - Dad would freeze them in milk cartons.
Only to find myself returning back there.
Yes, I broke the rules and still do to this day.
I've continued this tradition with my granddaughter now whenever I can.

What! that's a bummer!
She and I didn’t have a good start in the beginning for friendship, but that has since grown and I came to see her as a good person and would like to see her come back.
She has friends here that care about her even though I understand her reasons for leaving us behind.
She didn’t have that many friends. However, I want her to know that she need not worry herself over some that did not like her when she should relish the fact that she still has friends that likes her and are there for her.
And now she is gone.
And I hate seeing her go.

Maybe she decided to take a break and will be back. Or her work schedule is causing her to not be able to posts for a bit.

I’m not so sure of this..as was told to me.
Now I’m saddened about her departure that I knew was coming.
She will be missed.

What exactly was told to you? You knew this was coming... please share. We wish her return as well. You seem to be the only one that knows anything about this. You seem to be the one close to know. How can we help?

I don’t know if she would want me to share what she said through PM. So I don’t really wanna open up that can of worms. Not without her permission.
When someone trusts me with information, I do not speak of it unless the person says I can. So I am unable to say at this time.
However, what I will say is that she got bad vibes and didn’t want to be any trouble. So she said goodbye to me through PM, and left.
I would love to see her back..but I don’t think she’ll return here. 😔
The only way I had communication with her was by PM, and I have tried, but got nowhere.
Her and I got off on the wrong foot from the start, but that changed and I am grateful we got to be friends.
She wouldn’t say much through PM, and she had her reasons for this for which I respected, so we would always play on the threads and have a pretty good time doing so..
She said that because of my smile and kindness...I was her little ray of sunshine.
I feel so awful about her departure.
I know it wasn’t my fault because she had her reasons, but still, she is a good woman and I for one will miss her.
Hope she’s looking ‘cause; 🌞
Thank you for trying and for the chat.

I know she got upset that people weren't on here late at night when most were asleep and made what I considered a snarky comment over that. She didn't like that I told her that we couldn't stay up and cater to her and even Pete basically told her that people would reply when they could. I don't know if that upset or not but if so that is being a little thin skinned. We all are busy people with busy lives.

Thank You all for the kind comments and concern, but I'm really just taking a small break.
If there's just a few things about life, it has taught me this much:
Life is short so;
break the RULES.
FORGIVE quickly.
KISS slowly, and
LOVE truly.
LAUGH uncontrollably,
and NEVER REGRET anything that made you SMILE..
Quitting isn't an option - as the Prince once said to me - and I've always remembered that.
It's a great forum with huge potential, and I think that is why each of us chose to register here.

Very cool IslandGurl... cary on

I gave you all Karma for being the good people that you are.
Some I tried to do twice, but it said I had to wait 1 hour from doing so.
My Smiley Faces/pictorials features app. that I downloaded directly from Windows 10 site to use on this forum (since I'm not permitted to use the ones on Pete's) have also since been disabled.
Why, I have no idea..
I suppose I'm just meant to not ever use them.
I wish Prince could weigh in on this issue again as I would really appreciate finding a permanent solution to this problem that keeps repeating itself..

I think on some programs the smiley faces can't be used and on others it can. I have them on my phone and tablet but can't on my computer. Can't say for sure whether it is a technology issue or what.

Thank You for your response, PL.
I've been working on this issue on my own for some time now as I enjoy attaching such to some of my posts like other members here do.
Since then, there was a Bios upgrade (motherboard)
I can use them with private chat messages, but haven't tried it again on Pete's forum as of yet.
Perhaps, today could be my lucky day.

Back to the theme of this thread.
I'm most pleased to read Grizz and all of you here, so I decided to post another..
I've been searching through box after box of family keepsakes while creating an album for my granddaughter's upcoming 5th birthday when I came across an 8X10 framed picture.
Now, I recollect seeing this on my parent's living-room wall while growing up, so I decided to visit the digital archives to recapture the true essence of that moment in time to find out more about it, because I'm inquisitive like that.
The year was 1951 - I was not even born yet.
The picture was of Princess Elizabeth II and my oldest brother who was only two years old at the time - shaking hands.
One year later - after her father's death - at the age of 25, Princess Elizabeth II was crowned Queen Elizabeth II.
If I may do so here, I'll post this beautiful song to end this post with, and carry along my travels:

Thank You, Mr. Cowface.
I continue to read both you and the pretty one over yonder, but it got so hot & heavy in there that I'd thought I'd take a cold shower.
Shew - I've now dressed down into something a little more comfortable to keep up with you both.
Please forgive my attire, Sir.
A towel only accompanied with some -
high-heels..

Cyg - stop it.
It's Friday and time to party.
By now, I've drank one or two of white wine (carafes, that is) and thinking about now shredding that towel and running butt-naked through the nightshift crew.
EEK - so ya'll are best to cover up your eyes.
I'll be sure to apply my very best lipstick before doing so.💄

As a child I was always taught to look out for those less fortunate.
So, I carried on with this tradition of my parents.
I thought I would wander over to the trail behind my back forty to leave some sandwiches for the homeless that I saw sleeping there.
I did this for several times a week.
Only to find later, they setup camp within 300 yards of my property line that borders onto park land - only two tents - I could live with that.
During the next few days, more arrived - now within 100 yards of the property line.
That following evening, they entered my outbuildings to retrieve air mattresses, lanterns, camp stoves and the like and creeped back off into the night.
Now, I'm a reasonable person and I give much to many, but this pushed my limits.
So, I decided to contact the City as this is a family-oriented neighbourhood with small children.
I don't have to be a rocket scientist to know that needles will be within my own grandchildren's reach.
They informed me that Parks are open to homeless from the hours of 7:00 PM - until 9:00 AM.
I replied with, "I'm aware of that legislature, but they are now living in my backyard, and the
homeless can remain in parks for shelter only, not permanent living conditions, and as a taxpayer I WILL protect my property when one intrudes upon it."
They were gone the next day.
So, now I'm back to feeding the ducks in the pond and the rabbits amongst the trails..

It is sad that sometimes when you try and help someone they or others take advantage of one's goodness. My husband is on a board of a homeless shelters and they have rules such as no drugs, alcohol and other rules. People complain about the rules but the lady who runs it says if she didn't have those rules, there would be chaos.
-
as the saying goes give an inch they take a mile...so sad..but you got to do what you got to do...people works hard for their stuff they dont need someone coming along taking it from them...

It's a complex subject, PL.
You can always send them my way where the City leased two plots of land to the Province and hauled in over 150 pre-fabricated modular units at a cost of $7.25 million dollars (at taxpayer's expense) where no residents that reside there are required to ever seek counseling or treatment of any form.
In fact, the City advertised it as a wet house where they are permitted to do illicit drugs of their choice.
All I know is if I was to publicly announce and advertise my 2 bedroom rental as such - you can bet your ass the Cops would be busting down my doors, and I'd be sitting in jail for doing so.
These two housing projects that our Province invested in not only has promoted, but has enabled the problem, IMHO.
Crime is up and our property values have gone down as a result which was once known as prime real estate in my area.
Does our PM care, not really as it's not in his own personal neighbourhood that HE resides in.
One housing project is located adjacent to a popular children's playground where volunteers gather weekly to clean the site up of their drug activities.
That is what our PM has done for me, and for the future generation of my own grandchildren.
Now, I do believe that I've taken this off-topic from this original thread's purpose, and will resume to post some happy childhood memories in the future - if, I can think of any - I'm still pissed off.
Thank You for your comments - Princess & PL and for letting me vent..

Back to a childhood memory.
My grandfather was the consummate horse trainer for miles around. People would bring their horses and mules to him for him to train. It is where I learned to ride horses before I could walk. He was a horse whisper before I even knew what one was but the thing I remember the most about him is that he always had Trident spearmint gum. Lol.
-
I had a mule named Barney and a mare named Sally when I was a kid.
-
My great aunt gave me a cow named Blackie who was a mean as they come. She would allow my aunt and I to be close to her, but no one else dared come close ‘cause she’d mow them over.
She was a Black Angus.
-
We had a large Welsh pony named Buster. He used to unhook the stall hook and go down to visit the neighbors Shetland pony. The neighbor would call us and to let us know Buster was there again. He was aptly named Buster because he busted my Dad's arm when bucking Dad off.

Most people think ponies are cute and they are but they are also devious, stubborn and can be mean. Lol, I had to break one from having temper tantrums like its owner. Lol

Yes, they can be stubborn. When our barn caught fire and was burning down we were fortunate that our pony Buster was out in the pasture, but I had to hold him back by his halter the whole time from the fire because he was so upset and wanted to go back into the barn even though it was burning down. We managed to salvage a nest of a dozen chicken eggs... but the hen and rooster both ran back into the burning barn and were both lost. Dad took the eggs to a neighbor friend who had bannie hens and hatched them for us.

Here's a little interesting fact, horses and ponies will run back into a burning barn, a mule won't. A mule will stand still when needinf help such as getting something removed from its legs like barb wire but a horse will kill itself trying to get the wire off of it.

I've enjoyed reading here but I've been hesitant to post. I'm afraid I don't have the same kind of childhood memories you've all had. No farm work, no homemade biscuits on the table, no tire swings, no camping or fishing, and no delectable homegrown maters. I grew up on concrete and water. Spent a brief stint in rice paddies and a while in coconuts and pineapples. It was a different life but one I loved and all I knew. We did spend vacations at my grandparents in KY when we could, but not on a farm. The greatest thing in the world was knowing Santa could land his sleigh on an aircraft carrier and we could eat pressed turkey and Neapolitan ice cream squares. I grew up eating $hit on a shingle and loved it. I went to more schools than I can remember and didn't actually have a "best" friend until I was in my teens primarily because we weren't in any place long enough to actually have best friends.
However, I'm not a stranger to tobacco, cows, horses, chickens, pigs, hay, corn, and hard work. I married it.

Sounds like a great life to me Inco... I would wager by your description of life growing up you were raised in a full time military man family... a lifer. Much respect in this. You have more life experiances than anyone here. Much respect to you and especially your father. You are special and we thank you for your service and that of your entire family. Blessings

Everyone's childhood is different so your memories would be different than mine or someone else's. Post whatever memory you want.

I also totally agree with cowface on ICNO's life. I wager she saw more of the world than most of us did growing up.

Is it true Santa also delivers precision guided presents to poor little boys and girls in developing nations?
I agree with everyone else ICNO, everyone's childhood is unique and that's what makes for interesting stories and memories. Please feel free to share.

I grew up no different, was a kid in a coal mining area a kid in the 1970s and teenager in the 80s and was adapted to a TV culture myself. I always had the modern conviences of our time but we were not rich. I had decent vacations and been to many places myself....
Going to Lakeside Amusement Park near Roanoke every Summer was a big deal. That amusement park shut down in 1986 over a lawsuit that forced to close it down. It was outdated and Carowinds in Charlotte and Kings Dominion near Richmond took business away from them. They were a big deal before the 1970s.
I got many memories but nothing overwhelming impressive in my mind...
-
I remember walking to elementry school cutting accross our cornfield in the winter as a short cut, but if it was too bitterly cold and windy I walked backwards. Luckily it was only about a half a mile. Mom & Dad both left for their factory jobs early so my brother and I had to set our alarm clocks and get our own selves up, dressed, breakfast, and to school on time. We never missed.

Jumping on old used and patched tractor tire inner tubes ~ that was our form of a trampoline ~
If you had two or more people jumping at the same time and hit it just right, you could get pretty damn high in the air.
-
Had an old tire for a swing hanging on a tree. Jumping in a creek off an old tire swing.

Picking blackberries right off the bush.
Nothing was ever as sweet!

We rode our bikes to school.
It was great and we took short cuts too!

OMG, that was one of the fondest memories of my childhood.
I would hop on that train to Grandma's (mother's side) to spend most summers there, because I knew there would be always be a blackberry pie in the oven if I set out early enough with my ice-cream pail in tow.
I'm kinda hungry now, FS.
Could you toss me over a sticky cinnamon roll?

HI IslandGurl... can you rember any of your Grand or Greatgrandmothers cooking/baking with the old wood cook stoves? They were very elaborate and fancy... and must have been a real art to control the heat and cook or bake with. I don't remeber my family still using these, but have seen some country folks that still did years ago... pretty cool I thought.

My Grandmother did on my father's side in the Eagle River Valley.
They were pros at cooking - basic ingredients - comfort foods.
I wished that I could have spent more time with her, but I was young and she soon passed away.
I went back there in 1988 to visit my Godparents and take pictures of our old homestead.
My only daughter was conceived along the way. lol
My Dad always ironed the clothes - sheets, socks - didn't matter - they all got ironed at home while growing up.
That is what his Mother taught him.
I still hang my laundry out in the crisp morning air then fluff things up in the dryer.
I don't iron unless its uniforms or shirts.
I miss you and your pretty one, Cowface..

I have a childhood memmory riding on the school bus in the back seat.

Me too! In High school I always ran to be the first to claim the back seat. I never understood why it was a big deal with racism stuff... the back seat was the best seat on the whole bus.
-

Always nice to chat with you, too.
No, my father's parents were from England.

Cool! ...mine were from Germany... they fled Germany to evade the tyrany of Hitler. I hope the world realizes that not all of Germany was behind the Nazie regiem. My family among most others despised Hitler and his hatred... we all fled Germany and his sacralichg. It was a huge shame upon all Germany and all of us of German heritage. My family along with thousands others imagrated to North Western Ohio to farm.

I hate red bug bites... when I was working in the woods every day in the timber business I had to take a bleach bath every night to kill them... added a bit of bleach to my bath water. I learned that by injesting a bit of sulfer powder every monring helps keep red bugs away along with ticks also.

There was a swimming hole not far from here I lived and a bunch of we boys would sometimes go there to get away from the heat of summer.
There was a rope we’d swing from that was really high up. So once one of our friends had fetched the rope and started swinging, and as he did, another friend saw he wasn’t watching what was going on, and so, he pulled out his Willy and as the boy on the swing was returning, he peed right in his mouth on the return swing. 🤣
He hollered “AHH!!”, as he fell into the water.
Funny as hell! And I’ll never forget that day for as long as I live. 😂
Now that is funny.
-

Thanks, PL. it’s a good and funny moment of my own history that I thought I’d share.

In a way this is a childhood memory of my daughter's request for a cat when she was 15 - she'll be 31 this year.
I obliged and brought one home for her.
She turned out real mean - has a raccoon tail with the temperament of such, too.
I'm the only one that can pet her - but, not for long - then she bites your ankles.
Now, I've looked this up and some pros say it is a sign of affection - but, I beg to differ.
So shortly afterwards, off I went to fulfill her dream and brought home "Garfield" which was one of my very first avatars that I used on Topix1.
He's a cuddly bum, but watches over the yard like a Hawk.
He struts in one night with half of his ear torn off.
Gosh, what to do.
I froze his ear and brought out my trusty fishing line, and sewed it back on.
Just kidding, I did use surgical thread..
I have many raccoons on my property - apparently, Garfield didn't want to share his kibbles - most recently, in fact.
The fight ensued - the damage was beyond my own personal capabilities.
Off he went to the vet - $1200.00 was my contribution.
My daughter asked me if I was friggin' nuts, but I just didn't have the heart to put him down.
He's my love bug, and still struttin' his stuff and protecting my yard from any future invasions.
At this rate, it will be Freedom 85 for me. lol

Sounds like the story of my life... I never was one for cats... but my wee little daughter wanted a kitten... so we got her one. One morning I went to go to work... and I started up my truck... and I heard a thump, thump, thump

That's sad, Cowface.
I keep my cats indoors when the weather is cold to avoid that demise.
I will always have a barn cat - keeps the rats at bay.
And they are always soft to the touch..
How are you and your pretty one doing?

Freshly baked pies, hot out of the oven, cooling off on Mama's windowsill.

There was a time when I was with friends and we decided that we would go to the gas station where we got some huge tractor tiree.
Well, one asked who would be brave enough to get inside while they roll it down a hill that wasn’t a really steep grade.
I volunteered, got in...
and it was one hell of a ride. 😂

My Mom & Grandma always used Crisco.
I preferred a much more flaky crust and chose TenderFlake - for pies.
The only time I would use Crisco was for tarts where I would want a slightly more firmer pastry.
I liked pies with the fluted edge or lattice top, whereas my Mom pressed a fork around the edges of hers.
I used the left-over dough the same as you - Yum - I can taste it now. lol

Perhaps, you should rekindle that memory of your Momma's recipe, and make your pretty Mrs. a shrimp gumbo pie.

This is a good suggestion... one which I will consider. Thanks. I think Mom used butter in her pie crusts. Her pies were so good she was hired to bake pies in a local resteraunt early every morning.

Pioneer, hard-working woman - I love it.
That's a keepsake memory to always cherish.
Heirloom recipes are all we have left to pass on to our next generation.
I hope you find her heritage recipe - she sounds like she was a wonderful Mother.

We are doing very well and hope the same for you on whatever island you may be this night. We drive by the Grandparents old home place now and then. The property was sold when they both passed. The house is tore down as well is the out house... but Granpa's old unpainted barn still stands out back. I remember They were strick Mennonites and Grandma ran a tight ship. Grandpa had to sneak out back to that old barn for a smoke or chew now and then. No one but nobody smoked in front of Grandma... and I think our whole family smoked. Grandma was highly respected. I still can remember after Grandpa passed then Grandma took over the responsibility of saying grace over the meals. Boy could she pray... my brother and I and all the cousins have all tried to remember what her table prayer was. We can all here how she said it and the tone of her voice... but none of can remember the prayer exactly

Anybody swing on a gravevine, I did as a kid and am still alive! :)
I sure did.
When I was small I thought I could swing on an apple tree limb. Done that many times but one day that limb broke and here I went out over the hillside and down I slam to the ground..I was ok..Just lucky I didn't get the breathe knocked out of me or something broke.

We rode trees out, climb near the top of a slender tree and jump while holding on to it, you could ride it to the ground.

I lost my baby brother due to a motorcycle accident... He was 24.. My best brother ever. He took me frog gigging.
When he was little and I come to visit with my son, he would say, how about a kiss?. I told him don't you think you're getting a little too big for a kiss? He was around 9 at the time.

He was my best friend in the world who I thought of as my own brother. But sadly he was on LSD on a hairpin turn at 130mph and died instantaneously at the scene.
I was on my way home from a party we were having at a friends, so you can imagine the horror I felt as we were about to pass the ambulance, fire crew and bystanders that were already on the scene.
It broke my f-ing heart to bits as some of my friends and I got out of the car. I dashed toward him when an officer tried to keep me away, but I was having none of this and grabbed my friends broken body...to just ball like a child.
It still brings back sad memories when I think about this moment in time, as it is so hard to lose someone you grew up with from childhood.
This is why I don’t say much about this to anyone.
And I’m so very sorry for your loss.

I too have memories of besties that are no longer here ..... hard row
I never enjoy talking about my best friend and brother...but sometimes I have to for my own sanity...and there isn’t a day that I don’t reflect on this tragedy from my past that has haunted me for so long.
So young to be taken from us all.
I remember it as if it happened just yesterday when I saw his broken bike against a very large maple tree with its frame broken in half with his broken body smashed against this maple tree with a trunk about 4 feet across and over 60 feet in height.
I have kept this in for far to long and have been needing to vent this for some long awaited peace that never comes.
The officers two grabbed me from his broken body and wrestled me to the ground and all I could say was “he’s my bother! God-d-it! He's my brother!” I had blood all over me.
When they got me to the ground they kept saying “boy calm down! It’ll be alright!”, but it was far from alright.
This officer in charge (a friend just out of the military) sees what’s happening and calls them to bring be there while I’m still struggling after I’ve been handcuffed.
They bring me to him and he asked if he could talk to me, but at this point they said I was like I was in a comatose state and couldn’t relate to anyone. This part I don’t remember because all I could think of was the loss of my best friend and that I do remember and all too well I’m afraid and it’s been hell ever since.
But I’m glad I get to vent some of this here to release some of this past that’s constantly with me.

Hi Cyg... I sympathsize and you have my condolances. Grief is unending for loved ones close to us. You bore something more than just sorrow and grief you bear the trama and shock of that trajedy personally by being at the scene of the accident and death. You saw what is very difficult to see and others did not. This can cause PTSD and could be more than just the grief you are still struggling with. PTSD is treatable. Blessings to you friend.

Take your medication as prescribed and if it not helping see your Dr. again about it. You can always talk to me about it. Their is a higher power I would love to refer you to for the best help... if you ever want to allow yourself. Blessings

I had a great uncle the served in WW2, as did his brother. My great uncle was killed in the line of duty in the tank core - a Sherman that was obliterated by a King Tiger.
I do take it. But it doesn’t always help.
And I see the world for what it is, and see the people for what they are and not what they want me to believe. I see the reality and that gives me strength and hope, and that’s something that no fables will ever give.
Sorry if disappoint you, but I see no gods, whatsoever.

So sorry you carry that grief.
It’s fine. I just needed to vent to someone and that’s hard for me to do when I’ve always felt like I was at fault when I wasn’t there to prevent what happened.
It happened because he had gone to the same party and I knew he would be in danger, as we all knew he would do some crazy things once he was high as a kite and a few of us looked out for him and it worked. However, I told my friend hosting said party, I will call (Greg) to take my close friends keys once he arrived because we knew he was ready to get stoned. But amid having all the things going on around him, Greg forgot and carried on getting sidetracked, so I know it wasn’t his fault when I could have been there earlier, I however, was really busy at the time and wasn’t even thinking about it when I should have.
And you’re not alone with a friend shooting him self, but I know he loved his wife and child very dearly and put an end to himself by his .357 Magnum revolver to his head.
I guess he felt as I do about his love for his wife and child just as I do when you carry very deep feelings for your mate and child that you feel you can’t live without them. So I understand this when I wish he hadn’t. But he and his wonderful family are gone and no one saw it coming. He was very good at hiding his feelings.
He left a note for his sister because he knew she was to arrive the day he shot himself. So you can imagine how his sister felt once she came and saw his lifeless body on the living room floor ... but she’s dealing with the loss as best she can. She’s a strong woman and I admire her for her courage.
He too was a close friend from my childhood.
This incident happened not long ago and triggered my pain for both friends I lost.
Some are just good at hiding their pain.
Thank you for your kind words, and your time.

~ Summer Lemonade Stands ~
I remember a story where the City closed a "kid" down for not obtaining a "Business License" beforehand.
Trump, rings a bell..
Really? How heartless is that?
And yes, Trump comes to mind.
I remember putting up a water, lemonade, soda and tea stand where myself and a friend would make a small profit from the drinks. It was lots of fun and we could go buy some things after selling almost everything we had. (Always kept some for ourselves, lol!)

I agree...we are never alone.
I’m thankful for having the love of my life and my little one that’s all grown up now and getting ready for college.
They are what keeps me around as well as mother, siblings and a few friends.
Thank you for your kind words.
And, I thank you for yours along my travels.
We all cherish the same things in life:
Family, friends, love, and time to do such..

I fully agree. It’s all that keeps me here to stay even when bad things happen.

For many years...Every Easter my dad would buy me a Gardenia corsage to wear to church.
And, most every summer I got 2 new pair of Keds sneakers. One pair red and one pair white. The red ones I insisted on, the white ones my mom insisted on.
I also remember the, folded into a bulky square, newspaper, the sound of it, hitting our screen door/storm door with a thud.
I lived beside a church and every Summer there was an ice cream social. All the ladies of the church would bake their specialty dessert, my grandma would bake her pineapple upside cake...the only choice for me,..and everyone would get the dessert of choice, a bottle of Soda pop and a little square of ice cream wrapped in paper.
All...memories of much happier times.
WhenI was kid I never ever feared that someone would come into my church or school and try to kill me and my friends and teacher.

You’ve had a good childhood and I too like to reflect on those good memories in life with the people and places burned into your psyche are the moments I too treasure.
I’ll tell a story later about being in church with some mischief going on. lol
Thanks for telling your story.

I hit a softball into the stained glass window of that same church.

My "good" childhood wasn't so good after that little episode.

Shoes in the summer was a luxury not afforded to me.

Shoes in the summer was a luxury not afforded to me.
I too came from a very poor family that hardly had anything, but my mom worked two jobs and did everything she could so we could have a few nice things.
And I had only one pair of shoes.

My "good" childhood wasn't so good after that little episode.
I came from an abusive family on my dads side, so I sympathize and can relate.

Not your church, I don't think...the church where we had the ice cream socials.
My grandmother was a "Charter Member" of the church, held the key...THE only extra key to the church...my mom was married there and I was baptized there. Once that ball went through the stained glass...none of that mattered one bit!

No, it wasn’t my church where your incident happened, it was in my church that I was into mischief, so I can relate.
I’ll share my story later.

Of course! Nothing as painful as losing someone close ....
Just because I voted for Trump doesn't make me a total ars, lol!
My buddy addressed his suicide note to me which was so heartbreaking for his mom. But we were great buds. He was 15 I was 18 and we were neighbors.
Remember those kind of times? He, Barry, Danny, and I were always hanging out together. He was younger but seemed older.
At that age we were renegades. I had a '76 Mercury Cougar and since I was the only one with a car, we would cruise, or go to the lake. Great times. I never knew his reason, his note didn't say. All he said was he would miss me and he was sorry.
Boy ..... I'm tearing up thinking about him.

Was your friend in an abusive household?
I don’t know he’s reasons to take his own life but nevertheless I feel for you. Sounds like you two were really close buds with some really sweet times together.
I’m the same. We were really close. I think of those good times we shared growing up and what gets me through is focusing on those good times I had with my friend. We played together, would hunt and fish together, played games with other friends like football, baseball, basketball and in winter hockey, or just skate around with friends we’d invite, or play board games at home and I remember he and I had our girlfriends at the drive-in theater, his first time going to one and he was so nervous that when he turned to smile at his girl in the car, turned back to the door of the snack bar, but it was too late; he hit the door of the snack bar, face first, and said, “ouch!” We laughed at him so hard.
But then he hung around the wrong crowd and got into a big time drug habit that no one could stop. And it wasn’t long afterwards when he perished. A sad time.
But I think I will do my best to think of all those good times he and I had.
Thank you again.

I can relate. I know how that feels, but like you I’ve grown since then to become a better person and took an oath to never treat my child as was I was treated by my grandpa who could not bend me to his will cause I was just as stubborn as he was, and he knew it. lol

Long trail rides on my horse Dorian Grey.
We use to go to the old steeple chase and take the horses swimming in the Chattahoochee river.
Renee and I would pack a lunch and our chess board and sit on the sandbar while the horses rolled in the warm sand.
That was over 45 years ago ...... wow

Lazy, carefree days:
Making daisy & buttercup chains
Mom packing us a picnic lunch, and spending all day at the swim holes
Hatching frog eggs in fishbowls, and then releasing them back into the waters when they sprouted just two legs
Making homemade rootbeer in glass bottles, and hearing a few pop their caps in the middle of the night - too much yeast, perhaps.
Tire Swings and old Oak trees
And, knowing when to come back home before the street lights came on
Just a few of my favourite things..

At age 7 washing my baby brother's diapers out on a scrub board.
Making the old chicken house a club house. Saving our pennies to have a marsh mellow roast We asked for bottles from the neighbors.
Once this old man ( a drunker) provided us a marsh mellow and wiener roast for washing his dishes in the pan of rain water.. Where he lived was once our place to play.An old house at the end of the road. Very isolated..All this is in the mountains. The mountains very beautiful in the fall.

Dad would bring old things home from work. Once he brought a tub from inside of a dryer or maybe a washing machine. We set it up and 2 of us kids would place our legs inside and sit on the top while another one pushed it around..We took turns so all got to ride.

I remember my Mom packing our school lunch boxs with sandwiches wrapped in wax paper... it smelled so good in wax paper. This was before sandwich bags came out. Some years later our folks were able to pay for school cafeteria lunches which felt like eating at a restaurant.

No I don't. I may have seen that one a time or two but the others were more what we watch. Step mom would sometimes join in with us and dance. Dad wasn't at home. He was gone to work or to some place like the pool hall or maybe to the beer joint. He may have even went to see his other woman..lol

That coal dust is hard to get off. When I was a teenage, married at the time. I would go with my father-in-law to pick up coal at the mines. They would dump over the hill so each truck that came to get coal from the slate pile would get some. I was so black from the dust .I still burn coal today. Hard to find good coal anymore..... I feel for all those who has black lung..

Oh my goodness, that gum in baseball cards was hideous! When I was a teenager I chewed Doublemint and occasionally Juicy Fruit. I never chewed gum again until a few years ago. I started chewing Nicorette to quit smoking. Now, I'm addicted to the Nicorette. Life is so sad. 😥

I was just thinking to myself today when I bought ciggs, I'm gonna try niccorette gum, to try and cut back or quit. I can't afford the prices anymore, not to mention the health effects But that niccorette gum is expensive. Well, at least you quit the smoking. I never knew anyone could get addicted to nuccorette gum.

I remember my brothers and I always got socks and underwear for Christmas. Our stockings always had fruit and one chocolate Santa. We got books, coloring books and crayons, and a toy. We always had a real tree. Christmas was wonderful. Later when I was older I learned that my mother would use green stamps to get some of our toys. My paternal grandparents would always fly to visit us wherever we were and the trip to the airport was a delight. My maternal grandmother would send us each a Christmas card with a $1.00 in it.

I had 4 cousins...all boys...and every year their 'real' Christmas tree was put up by Santa on Christmas Eve. The tree lights were shaped like little candles and they bubbled. Boy, did I like those lights. My tree never had those kind of lights.
That's my Childhood Christmas memory.
