The environment is more important than the economy.

Ideally, a sustainable compromise between wants and needs could be had if our leaders were able to transcend momentary  greed and pettiness for the sake of our species' long-term existence. But the best we can hope for is a perverse gridlock perpetuated by a gang of impotent self important bureaucrats that favor grandstanding over greater good. It is unfortunately  the hallmark of our times that extremists and fringe lunatics hold sway while the sane majority is forced to endure the cacophony of chaos and squealing that squelches all rational discourse or progress.

One would think that persons elected to such lofty offices would be possessed of that minimal shred of grace that would oblige them to duty in a time of global crisis - such as a wildfire global pandemic or slaughterhouse war been waged in the homeland of our own cousins. But their egos and hatred has blinded them even to that what should should be instinct.

Right wing conspiracy yarns have become elevator music. No one cares anymore. Trump's not even worth hating he's doing county fairs and banquet halls. Even the **** crazies noticed he lost his magic. It was bound to happen. No one can speak so much untruth without it eventually going out of style, even in DC. The pandemic was/is not political, nor is the vaccine. Faucci isn't a "deep state" arch villain, he's an epidemiologist. Science isn't the work of satan because satan does not exist. For certain quarters to have made climate change and the pandemic  political issues is so absurd that it defies rational explanation.

Of course all of these things are related. Climate change, drought, wildfire, pandemic, plague, famine, war, forced migration and all of these things are the direct result of this misguided notion that an imaginary being in the sky gave man dominion over the planet and all its inhabitants to use as a garbage dump and whorehouse in perpetuity and without consequence. We have become an invasive species.

The prime mover of all calamity vexing humankind is over-population. We have exceeded the carrying capacity of the planet many times over.

Anyhow, regarding the pandemic. It seems that the virus has to a large degree assimilated itself into that population of generic viruses that cause the yearly illnesses we call colds and flu. A few die, some get profoundly ill, most don't...

.....and the long march of evolution continues for monkeys and microbes alike...

For the sake of posterity:

"It has been two years since the first COVID-19 vaccine was given to a patient in the United States. Since then, the U.S. has administered more than 655 million doses — 80 percent of the population has received at least one dose — with the cumulative effect of preventing more than 18 million additional hospitalizations and more than 3 million additional deaths. The swift development of the vaccine, emergency authorization to distribute widely, and rapid rollout have been instrumental in curbing hospitalization and death, while mitigating socioeconomic repercussions of the pandemic."

Globally, as of 8:47pm CET, 17 February 2023, there have been :

756,581,850 confirmed cases of COVID-19

6,844,267 deaths, reported to WHO

13,195,832,385 vaccine doses have been administered.

101,496,168  confirmed cases in the USA

1,103,936  deaths in the USA

I have been trying to follow this epidemic in China. It is quite obvious given the extreme measures they have taken that they are grossly understating the severity of this outbreak. They have isolated at least 60 million people, they are speed-building hospitals and now they are burning corpses without funerals.  Also, the US is setting up quarantine bases and preparing for calamity in ways that I never remember seeing during my lifetime.

I read that the number of Coronavirus infections doubles  roughly every 3 days, with death rate doubling at a similar rate, lagging by about 10 days... If this we’re to continue unabated the entire population of earth could be infected in 60 days, give or take.

Still I have trouble feeling sympathy for the Chinese given the way they treat animals in those disgusting "wet markets" of theirs and the practices of slaughtering endangered species for their bizarre and revolting culinary practices as well as the witchcraft of their 'traditional medicine'.

Maybe hitting the reset button on our species is a long-overdue eventuality.
Gee. If only we knew then what we know now.
