Apparently y'all were on a much different Topix than I myself. The breaking of Topix anonymity led to the downfall of Old Topix. People were attacking real people, putting their names out there and calling them murderers and far,far worse. Pictures of their houses were put up. Addresses put up,even phone numbers.
Just regular people. That led to the death of Old Topix.
I never said that kind of stuff didn’t happen. It happened from day 1 on Topix and if it was years down the road before you saw any of that or experienced any of it consider yourself lucky. However, that had nothing to do with the demise of Topix.
Chris Tolles was more than happy to have the constant barrage of criticism and negativity as it greatly increased post numbers and that’s what he used to sell advertising. Again, his profits were derived from the income received thru selling advertising. That was his only source of income from Topix and he made plenty of money. He had very low overhead therefore his profit margin was excellent. However, when people were no longer seeing the advertising, advertising slumped. Again, no income, no Topix.
Every company that succeeds and grows regardless of whether you like that company or not, only succeeds when they are profitable. When it became impossible to profit from Topix they had no choice but to “sail into the sunset”. At this point, I can’t say I’m sorry to see Topix gone.
Yes, everything you described did happen and would still be happening today were it not for the fact that Topix lost the majority of its income and could no longer sustain the losses.
